I am considering the purchase of a used 2001 Honda Foreman ATV with roughly 3000 miles and 500 hours of operation. It has been well maintained. Would this be considered a "high mileage" ATV? If you had to equate to a car, what would be the equivalent mileage for a car?

I have a 04 Foreman 450 MS 4X4. It has about that many hours on it. I have not maintained it "well". I am going to say from this one and others like it I know of 3000 miles is not realy broke in good. That Foreman is a great machine. I like the 450's better than the newer 500's. If you can read the artical that came out yeaterday in the Sucseful Farmer magazine, they "farm tested" several new ATVs. The 500 foreman came in in the top two in ALL the catagories they ranked them in. If you can get it at a fair price I do not think you will be unhappy with it.
Ad far as equating that to car miles I would say, 50-75,000. figure it worth 2/3 cost of a new one.

Is the Foreman air or liquid cooled? If air cooled and it`s been even a little maintained the engine ought to go 20k easy, if liquid, why not 100k like you would expect from any decent car or truck? Motorcycles do. Sure you might have to replace a few parts along the way but what doesn`t need periodic repairs?

I wouldn't be the least bit scared to buy it if the price is right. Like other have said, if maintained they'll go a long time. I have two ATV's, one with close to 3,000 miles and one with 2,000 miles and they still look and run like new. Key is, keep them away from stupid kids and mud holes. Mine are 4x4 and have been in places were 4x4 was necessary many times. They have not been in mud over the handle bars with the motor screaming wide open to see how far the mud will fling up into the air. That's the difference.

I have a 2005 Foreman Rubicon that already has 8500 miles on it, and it runs and drives great. I've had to fix a couple little things, only because of my carelessness and trying to push it too hard.

Like anything, it depends a lot on how it was used and cared for. And then of course if there was any design/mfg. flaws in that model. I had looked at the Honda"s in that time period, nice machine only they steered hard.

My brothers always had 300 Bayous, Kawasaki, beat the crap out of them and they just kept going. I bought a Polaris 500 because I liked the independent suspension, boy was I disappointed in that machine, my brothers will never let me live that one down. My son and I now each have 650 Kawasaki"s and love them. They also have enclosed brakes in the back, no dirt or ice in them. They just came out with electronic ignition, before that they were cold blooded starters. I guess that would not be an issue in the Southern U.S. Paul

Just curious what model Foreman you are looking at? I have a 2001 Rubicon that I use on the farm, only has 1226 miles on it. At the time it was the biggest Honda made. Fully automatic or ESP shifting, fulltime four wheel with a liquid cooled 550 cc. I had the very first model that came out with the ESP, I think it was a TRX 400 and then the next model, a Foreman ES before I bought the Rubicon. The only problem I have had with the Rubicon was the shifter broke off from the engine. The shifter rod uses a pivot point in the aluminum block and mine actually broke a piece of the block out. It was out of warranty by age and the part was about 300 to fix it, would have to actually replace part of the engine so it is still broke. I shift by actually moving the lever on the tranny. Other than this issue, I have been real happy with mine, have looked at getting a Rincon but I have been told by the salesmen that the tranny type in the Rincon would actually not be best for how I use it. So I will keep the Rubicon going for now.

500 hours at an average of 60 miles per hour is only 30,000 miles.

I would say it is just barely broken in - my brother's 06 Arctic Cat already has over 250 hours on it. You're only supposed to change the oil every 100 hours...

No lie, we had one with over 26,000 miles on it when we got rid of it! All you have to do is change the fluid, lube it, clean the air filter and adjust the valves! They are bullet proof!

Joe

Mud is bad for quad so I would avoid one that has been used as a swamp toy!

"They are bullet proof!" I would not go that far :-)One of my brothers has had the engine in his foreman apart three times now :-) He runs it hard! First time replaced the rings, second time had to have it bored, third time he was spraying weeds in hot weather (going slow) overheated and seized had to have a new sleeve, piston and rings.

I have a bayou 220 which has been buried in swamps all it's life, and the mileage is around 50,000 if you figured at it. Everything on it is shot, has no brakes, no compression, no suspension, smokes like the dickens, has a spray bomb paint job, and looks like pure heII!

I guess it IS bulletproof, seeing as it starts on the first pull. Each and every time. No matter if there is any oil in the crankcase or not. I'm really impressed with kawasaki. You guys would not believe how this smoking thing refuses to die.

On the honda foreman, there are things i would check. First looking under it from the rear, there is a little clear plastic bulb hanging down from the air box. See if that has gravel,or sand in it. That tells you that if it does it has been ridden in alot of water. That in my opinion is not good. Also listen to the motor run. Does it tick like a loose valve. If it does shut it off and see if it ticks even more on the final revolutions of the motor. Cam chain tensioners go bad in them and it is quite a job to change them. I own a 2004 Foreman and have had to put a tensioner in it. Do the front brakes work good?
