A young womans brother, told me that he heard her scream while she was unloading hay from a wagon. He looked out of the barn and she did not have her shirt on any more. The PTO tore it off.

A trucker I know, keeps his eyes out for bargains along the road. He bought a CASE tractor cheap. After he got it loaded, he was told that the only reason he got it so cheap was that some young kid lost his leg in the PTO while getting off the tractor.

Had a close call with a PTO when i was 6 or 7, throing a broken bale on my granpas old ford baler from the left side. I was wereing a bagy shirt and got to close. I would have been history if my cusin didn't grab me while granpa shut the tractor off, he had to cut the shirt off. Couldn't bale hay for the rest of the summer.
Always said that was proof there are angels, PTO are nothing to play with, they will hurt or kill you.

Have to be careful using the old plows too. Heard of a family friend that was plowing with a 4 bottom plow and hit a rock. Knocked him right off the tractor and rolled up in a furrow.

I my self have had a case of luck. Kicking a broke bale into the baler last summer. Missed a twine and it was around my foot! Lucky I was wearing tennis shoes. It came off and only my shoe got baled.
Should have seen the wife holler at me. dont make enough on the hay to loose a life.

Something to think about here in reply to Waljohn, 01-31-2008 14:25:58
New to the tractor world. I never gave much thought about that PTO. Will think about it when I am back there and around it. Better safe!

Dad always wore long-sleeved shirts. We were shelling corn one day with an old MM corn picker on our Super C. His shirt-tail got caught in the PTO, he grabbed the shirt near the buttons. The shirt looked like somebody took pruning shears and cut it straight across just below his hand (belly-button level). He had blood-blisters on the other side of his neck from the sudden tug, but sustained no other injuries. The ladies in the family that knew about sewing said the shirt shouldn't have torn that way because fabric doesn't tear "across the bias". Whole left front shirt-tail was gone, from the center to the side of the shirt.

Family just said he had angels watching him...

I got too close to a PTO on a MF # 12 baler once. Dad slapped me so hard I thought I would lose teeth.

I went to school with a kid that was found in a PTO driven corrugate opener. He was not found for several hours. He was in it for a very long time. He was a good kid, worked hard, and his life was cut short.

After that I knew why the old man slapped me so hard. He was doing me a favor. Ron

Thanks JMS, I never used "farm" to search, just "agriculture" and "PTO". Sometimes I just need to slow down and THINK simple! Jim

Heard a story of someone that lost a foot falling through a bush-hog. PTO was on and he stepped through the deck and fell through. I have never taken any chances with a PTO always turned it off then i get off the tractor. Always.

The older tractors that the operator mounted from the rear were very dangerous with the PTO. The greatest safety improvement was locating the seat so the operator mounted from side.

I have looked on you tube for tractor/PTO safety videos, and have not found anything with much substance. I want something to show my kids, I don't feel like me just telling them over and over is enough. Anyone have a link or suggestion? Thanks, Jim

Had a father in law Cut his carhardts apart to get his arm out of a corn picker, at 65 years old. He then walked to his truck And drove to the hospital. In I.C.U. for a week. He was oiling a chain and threads from his clothes wrapped the PTO shaft ! Trim off the loose threads or buy new carhardts!

Had someone by where i lived in WI. This was before i was born, he was out picking corn and for some reason got off the tractor, pto grabed his leg and wrapped him around it for a 1-3 hours, until his 90 year old aunt crawled out there on her hands and knees to find him. Dead
Thats a sad story

Waljohn,

I suppose that all of us are aware of the danger posed by a PTO shaft, but we need to be reminded periodically.

Thanks for the post.

Had a neighbor years ago who got his pantleg caught ina pto shaft. Luckily it was a 706 and just idling, ahd he thought quick enough to grab the PTO handle and pulled it down to shut the pto off. Was VERY lucky. Anopther neighbor had his pants torn off by a shaft. Lucky also.

When i was a boy back in the early 60's there were several older farmers around with 1 hand.
I asked my dad why this was and he replied
cornpickers.

Cornpickers were indeed one of the greatest hazards to farmer"s hands. Lots of old one handed farmers. Wife"s uncle was one. Lost left arm almost to the shoulder as a teenager. He was a very productive fellow with only the remaining arm. It did a lot to shape his later life. Never married, I think because he was afraid that he wasn"t acceptable to the gals. Truly was a sad situation, but he made the best of it that he could.

Farming is one of the most dangerous professions, and it is no wonder, when you look at what the machinery we have to use has to do. Think about the ripping, tearing, crushing, chopping, compacting, rolling, etc. that our machinery must do.
