Hi I work with a guy who sells straw and he wants me to haul it for him with my semi tractor to a guy buying it. There will be 2 van trailers that we swap. Meaning one will be loaded all i do is hook up and drive. I then drop the trailer at the buyers house and pickup the empty and drop it at the straw balers house to get reloaded. So all i do is drive and hook/unhook. no labor. It is 115 miles from balers place to buyers. Its about 15-20 from mine to the balers. Do I charge for this? What is a good rate? We are not close friends so Im not doing it as a favor. He needs a way to move straw and I want to help payoff my truck. Should I charge miles, bales, hours? I dont really know he wants me to come up with price so he can get everything arranged with buyer. Figure 150 miles one way to be safe dived by 5 miles per gallon equals 30 gallons fuel one way. 30 @ $3.50 equals $105 times 2 for round trip
$210 for fuel
5 hours time roughly
Please help I dont know whats fair for both. Thanks Matt

I would say these guys are not far off on there pricing, this would have to be a 500 dollar trip, ,, if he wants it by the hour tell him 75 bucks and hr,, that puts 25 in you pocket and 50 towards the truck for fuel, maintenance, insurance title etc,,, THats not an unheard of price for a 300 + mile round trip,, in all actuallity you should get paid both ways,, [not just the 150 there] because it is his trailer both ways,,, the travel from you to him will be your bite,,

and yes be sure that the trailers are loaded and unloaded before you leave ,, or it will be a 75 dollar and hour charge for waiting,,, more if you need to help unload,,,

he knows that it is cheaper to have you haul it at almost any price than for him to have his own rig,, besides he is including hauling in his sale you can be sure of that,,

you cant cut your throat I found that the hard way, if you are going to move your truck YOU NEED to get paid,,, a saying I heard that kinda changed my mind about how I charge,, and made sense, was bid them like you dont need them,,

good luck with you decision,, also remember one stop by DOT or a blow out, breakdown, etc,,, will be right out of your pocket,, so it aint all profit, if he sqwauks at the price,,

Nothing less than $2.00 per loaded mile will be profitable or worth your time. I know guys that get $1.80 with a one ton dually and trailer.

With todays fuel costs $1.50 per loaded mile not near enough! Also need to have a waiting (by the hour) at each end of the trip as needed to ensure that trailors will be loaded/unloaded when you get their. If you get their and trailor not loaded/unloaded guess will have to halp. You need some protection so this does not happen. Also when the job is completed somebody will have to get empty trailor back. Plan on no free miles for any reason!! Armand

Typical hauling in my area is $1.50 per mile from pickup point to dropoff point. The deadhead is at your expense. You would have 330 paying miles at $1.50 per mile or $495.00 for one trip... Gene

You gotta factor in wear and tear on your rig, your time plus your costs(fuel) etc.I don,t think anybody would expect you to work for just fuel, and over time miles means wear on your rig and parts are expensive, nothing is free or even cheap nowadays.Cheapest straw i can buy around here is over 6 bucks a bale so somebody will be making money on two trailer loads , you might as well makea honest amount as well.

Where are you at toolman? I have a couple of couple of hundred small square bales left in a barn. Have been asking $2.50 per bale. Plastic string tied. Located 25 miles southeast of Salina KS.
