Calculating Size of Hydraulic Motor Needed

O. K. I used to have some people do this if they needed this information on calculating the size of a hydraulic motor necessary to drive a truck. Now I need to replace a mechanical drive with a hydraulic drive on a piece of earth moving equipment for my neighbor. Speed of the drive is not the issue. I need to know what the horsepower or torque imput is necessary to drive this machine. Anybody have a formula? more information? Thanks in advance. J.

To everybody thanks for helping. For Mark you have a good point that I forgot about yesterday. Open center system match the flow to the pump as best you can and keep pressure down, closed center keep the pressure close to compensator setting and keep the flow as low as you can. Match the rest with a drive (sprockets pulleys etc if you need to. When the weather gets better I am going to check the size of the roller chain and check the RPM of the drive and see what the maximum troque capacity of that would be and then transpose it to see what we can come up with for motor calculations. May go with a axial pump. I have a Vickers that was used on a trencher and the swaash plate is controlled with linkage so you could regulate flow to match ground speed. I think we are going to borrow that idea as speed needs to be variable. Everybody, Thanks again. J/

Hi J.

Becareful about using HP as HP is very costly to use, either in fuel consumed or componet ware and is ONLY a calculated number.

Torque is King as it's the maximum advantage of movement that can be measured for the least amount of cost.
Once you have achived maximum torque then you can increase RPM to gain additional work "time" called HP.

If you wanna move it think torque.

If you wanna win a race think HP but just make sure you can afford to win the race using HP.

Can't calculate the size without knowing at least 2 out of 3 of the following. Torque, HP or rpm.

If you know the speed of rotation you can usually narrow down the torque (and thus the power transmitted) by the size of the shafts. You will at least have a range to start with.

If my memory serves me correctly there is a table of torque and power transmission ratings in the Machineries Handbook.

Remember that Speed is Fluid flow and fluid pressure is what makes Torque. Fluid motor torque per 100psi is Fluid motor displacement (Cu. In. Rev)/.0628

Fluid motor speed is 231 x GPM / Fluid motor disp. (cu. in. rev.)

Fluid motor HP is Torque output (in. lbs.) x RPM/ 63025 (this formula is for torque in inch pounds use 5252 for foot pounds instead of 63025.

You will need to know how much force is needed to move earth. What is the mech. drive torque now? how fast is it.?

Remember that Speed is Fluid flow and fluid pressure is what makes Torque.I respectfuly disagree.Increase the cubic inch of the motor run more flow at lower psi 800-1000.Motor will last much longer and run cooler.
Can you put a beam style torque wrench on this and see how much torque it takes to turn it.

That is what I am getting at. How do I determine how much torque or horsepower is used now for the mechanical drive. Also on your formulas in the real world you have to use percent of effecinecy. Anyhow a big thanks for helping. J.
