My son is engaged, they were going to have a JP marry then at the courthouse in the spring and then have a real ceremony when he gets to come home next Christmas. Her dad has cancer and they called him and said he only has a few days left. He got emergency leave from Navy for 5 days and came home to be with her. She wants her dad at her wedding, so they called last nite and they are getting married at her house tonite, and then he has to leave Wed to go back. Haven't said, but I'm guessing she will wait till after her dad passes and then go out to be with him in CT. Oldest daughter is having a fit because she hasn't met bride yet, not sure if she will like her or not. Keeps asking us what we are going to do about it. Told her we are going to go and smile and pray for the best, don't have too many options. She seems to be nice, decent girl, 24, he is 26. Just praying that this works out and he don't have to much trouble from Navy. Will let you know how it unfolds. Chris

BTW, makes absolutely no differnce if sister likes the bride or not. I hope she does, but in the final analysis, its none of her business. Sounds like both bride and groom have considerable character, so role of sister is fairly inconsequential.

Everyone wants a "storybook" wedding- lots of time to plan, everything "just right", etc.- but reality sometimes interjects itself. Groom has to work around military obligations, bride's father has few days left, etc.- I salute them for trying to do this in a way that addresses everybody's needs as best they can. Good for them- they thought of others rather than themselves. I wish them many happy years, and salute them for thinking of others rather than themselves. And BTW, Mr. Groom, thank you for your service.

Speaking of "non-traditional" weddings, my cousin's fiance was in a car wreck and broke his leg several days before the wedding.

They decided to have the wedding right on schedule in his hospital room anyway. All the appropriate people showed up at the appointed time--except the preacher. He thought it was a joke or publicity stunt and didn't bother to show up. Someone had to chase down the preacher and convince him it was for real.

The bride and groom are both retired now, and they still laugh about it.

With only a few hours left under highly emotional circumstances, family feelings will obviously have to wait.

Still, I couldn't help but wonder what are the father's true wishes ? Not the daughter's.

Has anyone considered that he might be just as happy that his daughter is engaged to a Navy man.

Tough problem. Good luck..... hope it all turns out fine.

Best wishes to all involved. Am sorry to hear about the bride's father. My first wedding was with a preacher and my last with a sheriff. God bless.
