Kubota Stopped Running

Have an L2950 that has run fine until yesterday. Fairly cold here last few weeks, down in single digits, but tractor has fired up without slightest hesitation. Blading snow yesterday and it just sputtered and stopped. Have full tank of diesel. Limped it back into the hay barn, would start up, just would not run, like it is starved for fuel. Do not yet have a service manual. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Thanks everyone for your comments. It was the fuel filter. Some water had gotten in to the filter and froze, there was some gelling in there as well. The filter screw cap itself was a bugger to remove, as it too was frozen, not enough room to get a full size hand in there to apply some real force. Couple hours workin' out in the cold, she is runnin' like new again.

My small kubota does that sometimes when it's real cold. Most times I find a little water in the fuel filter. I would change that first.

My Gehl skidloader with a Kubota engine did the same thing earlier this winter. Filter was gelled. Hard one to get to, and I don"t like the idea of changing filters on a cold, gelled engine. Fine after warm and working. That Kubota is a bear to prime even under good conditions. I just aimed a hair dryer at the filter for a couple of hours, started fine, and 5 gallons of #1 added to the #2 in the tank- been fine since, when it got really cold. -20 last week.

Hi Chris,

If it won't run, see if it'll walk!
Tractor humor, very little but still tractor humor :)

Heat and lots of it. If outside build a temp building around the tractor then add heat, tarp, straw bails, etc. Just don't burn down the tractor. Takes about 8hrs of heat, BBQ briskets, LP heater, etc; under a metal 55gal barrel lid, trash can lid, etc as then it won't burn the paint.

I never have any problems with the fuel itself here. They get the winter fuel on the go well ahead and it works fine. I do have one that has some water in it though....
I'd guess that's probably your problem as well. If the fuel is gelling/separating the wax out you'll easily see that. If not it's probably ice in a line somewhere.
For a starting point I'd probably drop a liter of Methyl Hydrate in the tank and give it some time to work. In the mean time I'd get a new filter, change the filter, drain the water separator and then fill the filter(s) so it's ready to bleed. Get the tractor on a block heater if it has one too... Also, before I put the new filter on I'd probably take the line loose from the filter housing hat leads to the tank and blow it back with compressed air. That should help dislodge antthing that's in the line. Go from there and see what happens.

When was the last time you changed the fuel filters or drained the water out of them? Are you using a winter blend fuel? How cold was the ambient temperature? You may have clogged filters ot some ice in the fuel tank or lines or filter housing or, if it"s really cold, the fuel may be jelling because you have summer grade fuel in it. I use a a 2:1 mix of #1 diesel and #2 diesel (2 parts #2 and 1part #1) for winter fuel and if I knew it would get as cold as it has been I"d have used half and half.
You"ll just have to check or replace the filters, drain water out of the tank and filters, and/or put some fuel additives(like Stanadyne products) to reduce the wax point of the fuel. Good Luck!

Thanks for the comments. I cannot get it to run long enough to get it warmed up. Will check the filter and try some more additive. I had added some but not on this tank full. Thanks again.

Additive won't help at this point because you need to get it through the system. Can you get it in a heated garage? How about putting a tarp over it and a heater under it? Just be careful with that. I'd change the fuel filter or take in in to warm it up.

I agree sounds like gelled fuel - do you have a winter blend and/or fuel additive with anti gel in your fuel ? Could also be alot of water in water seperator/fuel filter froze up. Try to get it warmed up or change filter, add some kerosene or additive to your fuel.

Sounds like jelled fuel to me. Can you warm it up and then try it?

Fuel filter or fuel gelling.
