I am looking to maybe buy one the following tractors tomorrow or next day. But I am not sure which would be the best for me to get. 1. Can I get parts for them that are going to be around a long time? 2. Is there a problem with this tractor that seems to happen a lot to others?
3. About $5000.00 is cost of each tractor. Is that to much. Your thoughts on this is important. Don't want to get a pig in the poke they use to say. A. MF 180 gas w/loader B. IH 2400 W/F w/Ind. Loader C. Ford 5000 w/loader

[quote="gene bender"](quoted from post at 23:37:46 01/24/08) FORD sold the tractor thingy yrs ago so how do you get parts. Just what do you plan on using the loader as your needs miyr require a larger tractor./quote]

Probably the same place as you would get the IH parts, as they have both been shuffled around enough to finally end up being the same company. Really all three companies in question have been bought out and sold quite abit over the years.

Condition would be my main concern. All are in the 50-60 hp neighborhood. I believe the IH is going to be the lightest weight tractor and have the smallest engine. The Ford would be next as far as weight, it is a 50 hp @ the drawbar tractor. The MF is about a 55 hp @ the drawbar tractor and is about 1200 pounds heavier than the Ford. If they are all solid tractors, it could come down to the condition of the tires as to which is the best deal.

Any one of the 3 COULD be a good tractor, or it COULD be a bomb. All 3 were fine machines in their day. You're buying the condition of a 30-something year old tractor now though.

I had a 5000. One of the best Fords ever built. Earlier ones had issues with pourous castings in the engine block. By the mere fact that it's still around and running today, obviously the one you're looking at isn't one that was effected. Later models had MUCH better steering. Look for one in the 1970's. Around here, and AVERAGE 5000 w/ loader is $6000 to $7500. Still have EXCELLENT parts support through NEW HOLLAND
MF180 is a flat deck 175 for all intents and purposes. Good tractor. 100 series Masseys sell good here. With a decent loader, $5000 to $6000 minimum. MF/AGCO still support parts for that tractor.

IH2400. ??? One I don't know much about. Sounds like an industrial model. That usually indicates a strong front axle , good for loader work. Also, probably more hydraulic capacity. Look at what sort of "industrial application" it's been through. May have been used little, may have been pounded on for years. I haven't owned an IH for years , but I'd bet CNH still supports IH brands very well. (Too many out there for them to turn their back on)

Which one seems to be in the best condition? That'd be MY choice.

Condition is the main question a Ford 5000 diesel
with loader could be worth only around $1000 for salvage if it had been brutalized and worn plumb out.On the other hand one that has been totally redone (not just painted) would be worth with loader $10,000 easily.Gassers are worth less.

Are there dealers close by for them? See if you can pay a mechanic to take a look. A dealer should be able to tell you the strong and weak points. Big Deans site has buying tips for MF tractors. Dave

I am also new at that but I will tell you that I looked at two tractors and bought two tractors over the course of 4 years. On both of them they both ran good and I paid half of what they are selling everywhere I could find a price on the internet. I would even get ahold of people that had already sold their tractor and asked them about the actual condition and what they got for them to find true market value. What I would say is if you are indeed new at this unless you feel you are getting a steal of a deal just keep looking at every tractor that is for sale so you can learn about each ones strong and weak points.

One more technique I utilize is to give a seller a little speech about not wanting to bargain. I tell them to give me their bottom selling price and that I will either accept it or not. If I do not, and they counter with a lower price I just keep walking because if they lied about their bottom dollar amount I wonder what else they are lying about. On more then a few occasions I would have been willing to pay, for example, $5000 dollars for an item after evaluating a vehicle. They told me their bottom dollar would be say $5500 and I said no and walked away. They then countered with a price of say $4500 and I just kept walking even though it was $500 below what I was willing to pay just 10 minutes earlier because I felt they were dishonest with me! When I tell them I was willing to go to $5000 if that was the first price they would have told me their jaws drop when I walk away from a counter offer of $4500. It is all about principle to me!

I like the bargaining part. And I'm just contrary enough that I would probably send you packing after your little "no bargain" speech, without even giving you a price. Guess I'm not hungry enough to let someone dictate to me how I'm going to sell my tractor.

The price range is in the 5,000 area. Some close to 6,000 . I have found one other tractor and that is a JD 50220. 130 hrp on engine. With a cab , Not known if deisel are gas. Does not say on form. Picture of it shows 1970 model with fair paint condition on it. But price is 4,000 for it with no loader. I do apperiate everyone who comments on this. For I am still new and know only a little. Thanks

A 1970 JD 5020 is a monster of a tractor. 1000 rpm PTO only, and loaders for them are not real common. I dont think thats what you want. If the Ford 5000 is in decent shape it would be my first choice. Parts are easily available through New Holland and many aftermarket suppliers. My opinion it is the best tractor of its size and age.

The only one of these I know much of anything about is the 5000. I have to disagree with old on this one, unless it is just plain junk (or gas with SOS) that sounds realy cheap. A good 5000 round here will go $5000 on it's own with out a loader. I would ask alot of questions about all of them. If one guy has all 3 for the same money something sounds fishy right there. For any body to give you good advice we need to know more. What kinda engines, tranys, what kinda loaders, what shape are they in, profmeters working, if so what are they show'n, does one of the 3 have new tires, who have they been treated, any repair records? Good luck.

Dave

What's wrong with the Ford? What are they not telling you? They generally sell for than and a bit more around here, so they would tend to ask a fair bit mroe than that again...
If it's in good working order, that's a good price... and if it's an 8 speed, should be a good tractor. It would be my pick from that list.

Sounds a little funny soneone would ask on this site whether and what kind of tractor he should buy. How do we know what you plan on doing with it and are you experienced enough to use one safe.

Of the three I'd expect the parts availability to be the BEST on the FORD. IH 2400 is something that I've never seen or heard of. May be an industrial... If it's an IH industrial, that pretty well relegated it's parts support to the cobwebs of a batcave in Siberia.
The Massey would be well supported, or I would think it would. The 5000 is well supported by virtue of the hundreds of thousands of them built. Look no further than NewHolland for parts, or many many sources in the aftermarket. The fact that Ford divested it's tractor interestes between 1991 and 1994 is of no signifigance whatsoever.
