I was looking at the machinery ads in the Ill. Agri News. Saw a couple of 4 wheel drives advertised as bareback, but they had cabs on them. I thought that the term bareback referred to tractors without a cab. What are they referring to? Chris

Every time I've seen it used it meant no 3-point and/or PTO. Applies to 4x4 and two-wheel drive tractors as well.

Hello, Chris! The term "bareback" refers to an articulated four-wheel-drive (like a Deere 8640) that doesn't have a PTO, or three-point-hitch. It can also mean no rear fenders, on some models. Usually refers to a drawbar-only 4WD with hydraulic couplers, and no other options. "Bareback" tractors tend to have wide-swinging drawbars, in lieu of the three-point-hitch.
