Ran out of eggs so when I stopped at the corner station I thought I'd pick up a dozzen. I expected to pay more than the large grocery store but didn't expect the $2.79 price. It was $1.79 when I got them last fall. With high fuel prices driving up the cost of grain, looks like the days of reasonable food prices may be long gone. It's not the farmers getting rich, their cost of supplies are sky rocketing.

I remember when we had a couple hundred chickens. We had customers for all the eggs, making a little money, not much. Then Krogers would have a loss leader sale on eggs (like 10 cents a dozen) and we would have a weeks worth of eggs to sell to the poultry shop in town. Thanks to Krogers we couldn't make any money and got out. That was probably part of their plan, get rid of the backyard producers.

I think the main problem is that wages arent going up nearly as fast as everything else is.People on fixed incomes are having problems.

I both own a farm and work in a factory.People at work often talk about high food prices but I never hear them bad mouth the farmer. Most are more worried about their wages, health insurance costs, high energy costs, the prices of houses and new vehicles-etc..

In the 1960's my Mom had 500 laying hens and sold eggs for 40 cents a dozen to the local college. In the summer when school was out we sold them for less.

I worked at a hatchery for 3 years.Early 60s, did some sales at the farm and sold to a few Diners.I remember the Diners would cry when the medium eggs ran out. They did not want to give their customers a large egg.The cost difference was about 1 cent per egg.We had to sell a lot of eggs whole sale to a large egg farm that packed eggs. They had their own feed mill and sold us feed at a lower price.

I heard it was a conspiracy headed by the member farms in CHEPEC (CHicken Egg producing/Eating Co-op). Yep, the government has been asking the chickens to lay more eggs, but they refuse. There is talk of soy eggs perhaps taking the place of real eggs and maybe in the near future.....corn eggs might come on the market. In the meantime, people are advised to curtail their egg guzzling ways and consider a meal that uses less eggs per serving (EPS).

Well lets see. We raise fertle hatching eggs via contract with Sanderson Farms. We have 10,000 hens and a 1,000 roosters in a house, and have two houses which were a $550,000 investment. Those chickens eat app. 24 tons of feed a week. Sanderson Farms provides the feed, the chickens, and their expertise. We provide the buildings, the labor, the water, and the utilities. Each chicken is valued at $40 apeice by Sanderson Farms. We collect at peak 9000 eggs per house per day, and right now we are averaging 7250 eggs/house/day. They pay us $.42 cent a dozen, and $.09 cent a dozen for nonhatchable. We use up to a 1000 gallons of water a day, have $1000-1100 utility bills, $500 dollar gas bills, taxes, insurance, cleanout, and farm expenses, and have to pay the bank to boot. We live comfortably, we eat, but we sure can't afford to be frivilous. Getting a $1500-2000 check every week is nice, but bills eat it up. Enough of a rant. Just thought I would show a little different view on this.

Price of everything is up because the value of the dollar is way down. Some say that's good because it makes US exports cheaper for other countries, which should help keep US unemployment down. And I hope that soon it won't make as much sense to manufacture and ship junk from places like China and India, but we have a ways to go there.

Just like the guy down the road that sells 5 cent hamburgers but is closed. He won't last long. Who are you or he trying to smoke.

I certainly prefer to have yokes that are orange and eggs you can throw at the skillet and they just bounce and the yoke remains intact.....even if they do have a little dung left on the shell.

Don't mind paying a couple bucks a dozen either. Just not a lot of them around here any more.

We take our excess eggs to church on Sunday and sell them for $1 per dozen as long as they supply a carton, $1.35 if they don't have a carton. We usually take anywhere from 4 to 10 dozen each Sunday and we never have any to take home. Now I guess I know why. Funny thing, we were told the attendance was up. Maybe we are the cause?

Beautiful eggs and we save the cartons for our local natural egg providers, don't care what they cost.

Just finished the pricing list for my food coop. We buy from a commercial food service company. $28.05 a case - (15 doz) - Ex Large. Translated, that's $1.87 a dozen. Seen it higher, seen it a lot lower. Checked on feed prices lately? We stocked up on our monthly sheep feed supply this week. Darn near dropped my checkbook when the clerk told me the price!

Just understand the reason for the price hike of virtually EVERYTHING is the ever escalating cost of petroleum...period! If the price hikes ever pull even percentage wise with the increased price of crude oil, and how the petroleum processors are capitalizing on it, we are just beginning to feel the pain, it'll be a lot worse. Just standby and try to accept the new world we're living in, so far that's about all we humble citizens have thought up.

eggs are always higher in the winter as chickens don"t lay as well, but some of the prices i see in the local stores are crazy. i did have to buy a dozen last week and they were $2.50/dozen ON SALE! just in november a dozen large size were less than $2.00. everything is going to go up in price fast now because of the fast rise in fuel prices. heard on the evening news that inflation is at it"s highest on 17 years.

Hey, thats still a $.47 breakfast. Pretty darned cheap. Them same eggs at Dennys would be what??$2.99. There is a lot of sourness about the cost of food the last few months, but food is still very cheap in this country. Like some one said the other day, hard to feel sorry for someone complaining about the price of milk, while the are sipping a $3.00 cup of Starbuck coffee, or a $5 drink. I am sure you in particular are not really complaining, just stating how surprised you were so no offense inteneded, but for many others I hope they think about it a bit before complaining too much.

Right on the not complaining part. Just supprised to see the price jump that much in a short time. Born and raised on a farm. Dad worked in town to feed us six kids since there wasn't enough farm ground to make a living. Wife says i'm kinda cheap sometimes but theres no way Star Bucks is ever gonna get any of my money. Milk around here is the best buy since most convenience-filling stations us it a a loss leader to get you in the door. 2 gal. for $5.99 at most places. $2.79-$4.79 at the big discount foodstores.

It's good that the price of eggs did go up with inputs,or they would have problems staying afloat.
