After 35-40 years my faithful battery charger bit the dust today. So,having not been in the market for one for awhile, I was wondering what brand and"size" you fellas reccommend. The one I had had settings for 6 V slow, fast , and boost, and 12V, slow, fast and boost. Can't see that I would need a 6V setting as I don't have anything with 6 Vs any more, but liked the slow, fast and boost features.I have occasion to charge batteries on my garden tractors, Super A and Diesel truck

We have a charger similar to this one. But ours is the 55 amp start model. For this price you cant beat it. They are literally indestructible. Long story short. MY grandpa put it down in the grass in front of the shed door, drove the tractor out smashed it, took it apart pounded out the case soldered one wire back on and it works perfect. you wont be disappointed.

Past performance of old companies means nothing now. They all have the China syndrome Shumacher will not sell me repair parts now.Ive repaired battery and fence chargers for over 50 years.A local tv and appliance dealer I worked for gave up selling TV sets and is now converting much of its floor space to small apartments. This business started in 1952 and is in trouble now.Find someone who can repair your old chargers because the new ones ar crap.

Let me warn you.

New battery chargers are much smarter than we.

They will not charge a "DEAD" battery.

So if you happen to have a bettery that is totally dead, you'll have to jump it over to the pickup or something to get a little juice in it before hooking it up. Or the charger won't work.

i have a snap on charger here at the shop, big one, low med hi boost,. all 12v no 6v, couple hundred for that dang thing. at the farm i have a schumacher from farm and fleet, 6v,12v low med hi with boost. schumacher was about 85 dollars. it is every bit as good as the snap on, and it lives in the barn, unheated, the snap on is n a heated shop. for the money the schumacher is a good charger!!

MANY of the new ones are from "the land of almost right".

Any chance your old one can be repaired?

Amen to that... We gotta be careful cause we may forget that stuff used to last 35+ years... Check the back of your canned mushrooms and see where they come from. The ones in my pantry came from China and so did all the others on the shelf. I know they have material to grow good mushrooms from in China, but I bet we can find that same material here. (Insert political joke here).

US companies are selling chargers made in china.Friend bought one with a lot of pretty leds.As soon as the battery takes a surface charge the charger shuts off.My hydrometer says the battery is only half charged when this charger shuts off.No transformer in this winner.

Thanks for the replys. I don't know if the old one could be repaired. I'm going to take the covers off it and take a look,(not that I would have any idea what I was seeing). Think I'll google Schumacher and see what turns up.

I had a schunacher for years and it was great. Could not find one when my neighbor tried to charge his battery backwards or some such , and now have a sears but I would bet you can get a schumacher from Wal Mart because I saw one there recently. Henry

Just went out and looked at my new charger I bought a couple of months ago at Wal Mart for my 6 volt batteries and lo and behold, its a schumacher. I has 6 & 12 volt chraging at 2,4,or6 amps. It really works great, is fast and smart because When I hooked it up 12 volts to a 6 volt battery, it told me I had made a mistake and would not charge (thanks a lot). It is the older one from sears that does not have 6 volt but it has a 50 amp hot shot for cranking. Henry
