Bought this one totally sight unseen and just took the PO's word for it. Today was the first time I had time to really look at the ol' gal, so I used it this morning to do some chores.

56 years old.

Only thing I can find wrong is that it needs the seat bushings replaced, right brake needs attended to and the throw-out bearing really should be greased. New front tires (someday).

Otherwise we are good to go.

Fella told me that his grandpa had "gone thru it 20 years ago and parked it" and that he was always tinkerin' with it. Tinkerin' with it?

I guess!

New engine, all new hoses/belts, new radiator, new guages, new starter, new battery, and set up on 12 volts with a generator not an alternator.

Absolute zero sounds from the rear end and it purrs like a kitten.

Thanks Dustin, your Granpa did well. I'm really impressed with his tractor!

Finally got one that I don't have to rebuild. :>)

Take heart, Allan- maybe that throw-out bearing will give up the ghost, so you'll get to split it!

Nice tractor- and I know its nice to get one once in awhile thats ready to rocket.

I heard that all my life. The M isn't as bad as most let on they are. Heard folks tell when I was a kid of them burning 50 to 60 gallons a day. There is no way. I have pulled 3 X 14 plow, 10 foot disk, and a 2 row picker from daylight until dark many a time, and have yet to pass 35 gallons on either of my M's. Hell the 2555 JD I had burned more than that pulling the same size implements and it was diesel.

Thats still around 3 gals per hr with a 40HP tractor where most diesels won't burn a gal/hr
that HP.At $3/gal X 2 extra gals/hrs thats $60 EXTRA in a 10 hr day.You could make a pretty decent tractor payment with that.

Allen, you will like that old jewel. I would be lost without my M's. They are always ready to go. Start in all weather, and pull like a billy goat.

allan looks like you got a hay racking tractor. now you need a heat houser to help keep you half warm when feeding those cows. you don't want a cab as you will get spoiled and make me jealous as i don't even have a heat houser on any yet. i will when i get the 730 back.

Gotta add power steering so you can control those gripper tires when you kick the FWD in! LOL

Looks nice, I'd like an M, but don't know what I'd use it for as the H's seem to have enough power for everything I hook them to.

Looks to be a nice tractor. I'm thinking that many would die for a tractor like that. I don't know or care what you paid for that old iron, but I'm sure that it wasn't nearly as much as some as the new tin goes for that I hear asked about. Color don't really mean all that much to me, not if its a good tractor that does what it's supposed to when its supposed to, and aint got a mortgage on it. And if it aint running 56 years from now, it won't be because it aint up to it, it'll be that gasoline don't exist anymore. A W/F to boot. The Deere guy up the road had a W/F JD A on his lot a couple of years ago when I bought my 4520...a '70 4520, not that new tin that they call a 4520. W'F's on them old timers can come in handy, and some times not as handy as a N/F, but can't have it all, all of the time.

As always, enjoy, be safe. By the way, I saw a lineup of your tractors a short time ago setting out in the snow, didn't see no coffee cans over the stacks or covers over the shifter boots. I sure let one set out in the snow once, can over the stack, but moisture down the shifter around the boot sure made a mess in the tranny. Aint ever doing that again.

Mark

Like I said, the H has a big brother, even down to the wide front end. You have great luck in finding those jewels, or is it just good judgement?

Total and absolute blind luck and a heck of an honest seller.

Last M I was around was when I was 10 years old so it's not like I know what to look for. :>(
