Found this IH 720 6-16's plow for sale.

What are the claw-type attatchments at top of mold-board? Obviously for a different soil type than I'm used to here in Minnesota.Sandy or light maybe? Dunno..... ..... .

We have another 720(4-20's)Between the IH's and the Olivers, good easy pulling plow. ~brad

Brad,

We had those trash covers on all three 720's. 4-16's, 5-18" and 6-18's. That was in south central MN. Janesville, Waseca, Waterville area. Did a good job of covering corn stalk residue. Sister lives near Harmony. Soil is a little lighter there, so probably covers ok without them.

Well, we used to call them cover boards, but the guys below have the answer as to what they're for. Especially useful in sod, where you really want the sod rolled over in the furrow.

Back in the olden days, if you left trash on the surface after plowing you were doing a terrible job. They thought the object of the game was to completely cover all trash when plowing. They were called coverboards around here, W Ill. Times have changed now, the more trash you leave, the better it is, IF the gov't will even let you plow your land. Mine's all HEL, wish I could plow a little of it. Chris

They are trash boards. They catch the trash being carried on the top of the furrow slice and turns it down into the forrow bottom so it's covered.

Trash boards

I don't think they are particular to a soil type. More likly the dealer that sold that plow new liked them. They helped throw more of the trash where it would be buried.

Maybe someone who has more experience plowing will be able to offer more insight.

Brad: Trashboards, designed for just what they say, covering trash.

Thanks Hugh.

Are they really needed? Just a preference thing? The 720 we have now covers high corn residue real well, but always room for improvement, I guess. ~brad

Brad: I've never used trash boards, like you I never found them very necessary. I have seen guys using them, and didn't think they much more effective than without. A chain or cable going from plow beam across the front of each bottom and long enough to pull under the forrow about 12", will put trash down as well or better.

Hugh, they shine in sod. When plowing deeper than the plow can turn good, they help with getting all the grass covered. Unlike with fodder and crop residue, sod needs to be covered completely or grass will continue to grow at the seam of every furrow.
