Ol' heifer sure uses a lot of fuel.

Can't figure out why neither. Maybe I should have taped the rain cap down on the M?

Well,

I was in a bit of a hurry because I was getting way behind on my "real job" chores.

130 mile trip and I had the tractor unloaded and sitting in the yard in two hours and 15 minutes.

Don't get caught in tennessee with red fuel in your truck. They will take your truck with what ever is attached to it, and you'll have to go to their sell to get it back.. Then the fines could be as high as 10,000.00 dollars.

I borrowed a friends truck to do a tow job. It was a 2002 Dodge 2500 TD. He had the wick turned way up with a big turbo, big injectors, power programmer, exhaust, etc... He had fuel pressure gauges, pyrometer, boost gauge, tranny temp gauge, oil temp gauge. Darned thing looked like a jet cockpit. Anyhow, we towed a 9000lb load and got 14mpg. I was severely impressed. Dropped the load, turned around and got 14mpg on the way back empty.... It took exactly the same amount of fuel on the return trip, within the gallon. Don't think I ever used more than the first 1/10th of the throttle... It was quite a learning curve since my last experience with a diesel was a 86 Chevrolet breadtruck...

Glad you made it safe. Lots of folks were following this one.

Aaron

i know a man that put some of the red farm diesel
in semi as he didn't have much in tank. he put in enough to get to town about 5 miles away. filled up and took corn to delivery point. well il dot guys were checking everybody for eveything and he still had enough red stuff left to give rest of tank some color. he told them his story and was told doesn't matter you should have found some 5 gallons cans filled them in town dumped in semi then went to town to fill up.

Allan,
Did you double check the actual mileage? we had a van a few years ago that had that MPG gauge, it was always short of actual milage by at least 1.5 mpg. I have been told that MPG goes in the dump over 2000rpm on the 7.3, looks like you were about 21-2200rpm

Bob I want to go back to Nebraska and visit the kids on my Case LA with my trailer made into a house trailer and a place for my dog to ride. I figure it would take a week or two at 4 to 5 MPH (maybe I should get the 4th gear working first). I think it would be great fun to travel slow like my ancestors did coming out here in 1843. One bad problem is the LA burns 4 to 5 gallons an hour. Yea! and Allen is complaining HUH!!! Maybe i can get bunch of Old tractor guys to go along for the ride or they could just catchup and run along for awhile. Sure would be a great ride.

Oh yeah, for sure.

Don't think the tractor weighs but 3 ton, however this trailer just plain tugs hard.

Borrowed the neighbor's last summer and it really pulled easy compared to mine.

Maybe that's why it got traded off when only a year old and was such a cheap price? Dunno.

Never, ever called anyone "stupid". Not in my nature and it just didn't happen.

Yes, I'm of the opinion that tractors out on the road are dangerous.

No, I'm not immune to an accident any more than anyone else.

Tractor was two states away. Didn't have a choice; either drive it or I had to haul it. Since it is the middle of winter, I opted to haul the darned old thing.

Alan, Mornin! Glad to see that you made it home in one piece, with no real problems other than that 6.4s crappy mileage. Down here in Cen-Texas this country has become lousy with these DSLs. 12 to 14 mpg is the norm. Folks who traded of 7.3 and 6.0 are not happy at all. Unless they live with a trailer on the back of their trucks, then the mileage is about the same. I sure you have visited with your Dealer about this, Have they had any suggestions to help the problem.
I would not put Red DSL in you new truck there is no telling what might happen. On the newer GM DSLs there are sensors in the fuel tank/system. IF Red DSL is detected the engine switches to Idle mode and will not run any faster than that, just enough to cripple into the dealer, or up onto a wrecker, then the tank has to be pumped out, and reprimed with Road-DSL, recalibrated to get the engine going again. That is what happens in that senerio. I would not want to be the guy who does that to a new Ford. It might run fine, or it might do like the GMs. Just a thought! Have you checked with the After-market people to see if there is something there to help improve milesge, like... Bullydog, or Banks.
Look forward to pics and stories about your M.
Later,
John A.

John, just talked to the service rep at Indians largest Chevy dealer and he told me he's never heard of any red fuel sensor in the tank. Just to double check I called another dealer and was told by them they never heard of any sensor of that type either. I do know that a couple of years ago, a friend was among several who got random checked for farm fuel by the DOT. at the Farm Show here in Ft. Wayne. He still had some residue from using it when he was busy shelling corn. Just one of those dumb things when he didn't have time to run to town for fuel. Cost him $2000. for that tank of fuel not counting the cost of fuel.

BS! there is no sensor that detects dyed fuel in new GM's or and truck. The only issues with running dyed fuel is the IRS and tax evasion and the hefty fines if caught and higher sulfer levels that will plug your DPF! Allan you should be carefull about running non ULSD "Ultra Low Sulfer Diesel" in your new truck. The higher sulfer content in non ULSD will plug your DPF "diesel particulate filter" over time. Those suckers cost a couple grand and would not be covered by warranty if plugged by sulfer. BTW my 08 Duramax/Allison has been averaging 20MPG empty on winter fuel and pulling a load like you did would average 16MPG. Only thing is my Duramax does not like to cruise at 75 MPH. Best milage is about 65MPH when I hit 70 MPH milage drops about 5MPG.

Scott, Before you take Hoof & Mouth Disease And you speak on a subject you know nothing about. I got my info from a local rancher who does run Red Dsl in his 2000 GM 4x4 pickup 97K miles all on red fuel. He had it in the local GM shop where he trades , for pump work, the guys there informed him that in the new Pickups he would not be able to do this.
Scott, YOU be brave and run Red Dsl in your truck and let us know what happens! The electonics othe truck will cause it to run a standby or idle mode, till the Red higher Sulfur content fuel is removed.
Not to mention the Red dye residue left in the fuel system that will still give a swab test a positive reading for a long time after the fuel is removed. That Dye will stain the iside of the system, tank, lines, pump, etc. Dealership told my neighbor for his truck to pass a test the entire fuel system would have to be replaced, everything!

John A.

I can`t agree with you on the dyed fuel theory either, there would have to be a photo sensor or something similar in the tank to sense the red fuel if what a local fuels supplier told me is true, ULSD and red dyed fuel are the same fuel with the exception of the dye. The fuel suppliers aren`t building new tank farms to house ULSD supplies.

I don`t run the dyed fuel in my truck because I won`t risk the fine but I know many who do with no problems.

BTW, my 04.5 Ram 3500 with the Cummins 600 and 48RE auto is finally getting respectable fuel mileage for a diesel. It took over 60k on the odometer and for my stainless muffler to rust off on both ends???? but I`m finally averaging right about 21mpg in typical stop and go country road driving if I don`t let the tach get above 1800 rpm. That`ll get me down the road at ~65mph.

I would not be stupid and run dyed fuel in any of my on road diesels. The IRS is in town at least once per week dipping tanks. As for a red dye sensor one does not exist in a pickup truck. Anyone telling you this is full of bull. GM does not care if you run dyed fuel. Dye does not effect the motor in any way. IRS is the only one that cares if you run red fuel because of the tax issue. Red dyed fuel or farm fuel still can be high sulfer content. The sulfer is what causes the limp mode. The truck can sense to DPF plugging to soon from the sulfer and shuts it down to prevent damage. If your fuel suppler has red dyed ULSD you can run it in the 07+ trucks with no problem just as long as the IRS/DOT doesn't catch you!

Nice looking ride. In Oct 06 I bought an 07 GMC ext cab with the Duramax/Allison. Not getting the 20 mpg empty and haven't got to pull a trailer with it yet. Wanted the regular cab, but Momma-San didn't like the idea of not having the elec windows, power seat and no room behind the seat, and a lot of other things about what I wanted so I did the next best thing and bought something that she would gripe too much about. This is my "retirement truck" and hope to do a little hauling, towing and traveling with it once I get out of the Air Force in Oct 09. Looking forward/dreaming of doing some restorations of farm tractors/equipment and old pickups. Hopefully if I can break even (or close to it) then I feel that it will be a worthwhile hobby...and the therapy will be a bonus.

Take care and good Luck,

MN Scott, My 04 Duramax gets 20 mpg. day in day out around town [although it takes about 10 miles to get there]. I had the computer reprogramed at 50,000 miles and it went from the high 16's to 20. No chips or programes just re-programed. Checked with the dealer and this change doesn't affect the warrenty. BTW, and I only did this once, the truck now doesn't cut out at 95 mph. I've been told on GM's you can bypass this anyway by putting on your 4-way flashers. I'm going to visit relatives just north of New Orleans next week. I'm planning on pulling a empty trailer down and bringing back a hy-crop JD back. I'll be back at the end of the month and will give everyone a up date on the milage. The round trip will be around 2200 miles.
For Allen in NE, my brother-in-law recently bought a 08 double-cab 350 ford and his milage is similar to yours. He says its way more snappy than his 01 was.
