They are suposed to last 7-10 times longer than the plasma's. Used to be poor at bluring motion, but have gotten a lot better. Hi Def makes you think you are there. My wife and I had refused to buy one until we found the following on-sale.
We just bought a new 42" Sony LCD for $680. Seems to be a good deal since most I seed cost a lot more.

We don't care about the HD. We watch mostly rented movies from Netfix and they all come widescreen. So, we bought the new LCD mostly for the widescreen. Also bought a region-free DVD player since we've been buying old American TV progamming that's only available in Germany. We're not German - it just so happens that many versions of old westerns - like Bonanza and Gunsmoke are only available in complete form in Germany - and not the U.S. Why?? I don't have a clue. But to view, we had to get a European and region-free DVD player.

One big benefit though with the widescreen LCD is - we're on solar electric and the LCD uses a lot less power than our old 32" square CRT TV.

Only have one idiot box here and it's a 2 year old Sony model 420 Cathode Ray Tube 26" with the old 4X3 ratio screen. That model's design was released in 2001. It has no problem with just an outside over the air antenna. To stream unrealistic, mindless or immoral sh*t into my children's heads.

I looked at ALOT of tv's before getting mine. Researched about every one on the market in the 50 inch catagory. I bought a Sony 50 inch LCD. AWESOME picture. I have yet to see any other brand come close. Very happy I got the one I did. Needless to say, I hold the superbowl party this year. Had a 57 rear projector for last year, its in the master bedroom now.
