A gallery photo of your item is important as I scan those photos and stop at whatever one catches my eye. When I open up the auction page,
I most certainly want to see more than ONE photo
of the item. This is important as you can't hold
the item in your hand to inspect it as you do at the shows or flea market. I also rely on the sellers condition description and the feedback rating validating his/her successes in their auction expertise.

Listing fees are charged on anything you list. The amount of the fee seems to depend on your starting bid amount and also the category you place it in. I normally start things out at $9.99 and the listing fee is about 35 or 40 cents. Beyond that there are options which you can buy or not. I usually pay the 35 cents (I think) for a Gallery photo (the little thumbnail photo that appears next to the listing). Sometimes I'll pop for the 10 cent scheduled start option. That way I can work on listing items all day and have them start in the evening. It seems that stuff that ends in the evening gets more bidding action at the last minute which translates to higher selling prices.

If your item sells, there is a Final Value fee which is based on the final selling price.

When listing items, you can add 1 photo for free. Each additional photo is about 15 cents. If you understand how to embed photos using html then you can put unlimited photos for no charge. If you go overboard on the html photos the listing will be very slow to load and some potential buyers will bail out without waiting.

A smart thing for sellers to do is to search and
make sure there are not already 100 of the item that they want to sell aready out there waiting
for bids. It would be nice if a message from ebay
flashed on the screen warning the seller of that. But Hey! the listing fees make them money.

Sure there are fees and yes they do add up but all in all you can't sell anything today without using ebay. The results are worth it. I have spent alot of money in paper ads and your lucky to even get a call. One of the last things I sold on ebay went to someone just a few miles down the road. They saw it in the yard for sale awhile before but until it was on ebay did they get off their rear and come on up and buy it.

I have been selling on ebay for over 5 years and to this day, I do not use Any of their perks and extras that have fees. The only fees that I ever pay are the Listing Fee (40 cents) and the Final Value Fee based on the winning bid. At the end of each year, The cost of my items + the ebay fees work out to about 17% of my gross sales including the few that don`t sell. My sell through rate is between 80% and 100% of any group of items that I list.(up to 18 items per group at a time). The only other fee that you as a New seller will be required to pay, is for Pay-Pal payments that are made to you by a winning bidder if they choose to pay that way. New sellers are now required to accept Pay-pal payments.

Here is an ebay web page where you can check out the fees and other seller info.

Ebay has stolen/con'ed more money from honest folk then we could ever imagine.

Not that two wrongs make a right.

The sad part is, after all their charges, they aren't keeping the stock market convinced they are making enough money, according to recent news items.

YES you still have to pay for it if the item fails to sell, only the charreges you racked up listing the item though, I have been there and done it.

not taxes, just ebay seller fees. They've changed them a bit lately, and you really gotta watch yourself when you set prices and the buy it now prices. Every little thing you do racks up charges. But you can evade these charges if you thought hard enough :)

There's always a listing fee - doesn't matter if the item sells or not.

I think you missed his point.

E-bay charges based on initial bid price too.

i.e. if initial bid is $0.99 is is less than if you start at $1.00.

Thus if you know ther price schedule you can "skip" out of some of the cost by being a smart consumer.

To your diner example. When we go to a sports bar for Monday Night Football we make sure we order a beer before the 9:00pm Happy hour cut off time. Mug before 9:00pm is $2.00 after $3.50. not stealing just playing the merchants game.
