I went to put the AC HD 5 in the shed yesterday and almost got into trouble. It has a hand clutch and my brain seems to always think foot clutch. As I went past the dozer, I bumped it with the highlift bucket and that started a chain event with me pushing the dozer. I kept stepped on the left side brake like it was a clutch. Habits are hard to break. I sometimes wonder if I am the only one who does this? I guess it is instinctive.

First learned to ride a British Matchless Motorcycle with the shifter on right and foot brake on left and then later had a Honda with them on opposite sides. Lucky it was 15 or 20 years between them. I also once drove a FreightLiner for a couple of weeks that had a 9 sp tranny that had the top 2 gears switched. You shifted it in an O instead of a H, interesting indeed both upshifting and downshifting.

A neighbor of mine had a hired man driving his J D B pulling forage wagons. Guy came up to the silo and hit the left pedal HARD, spun it against the silo, broke the tractor in two! Later, it was repaired/rebuilt.

Once many years ago, was plowing oat stubble with our '40 A John Deere. After lunch my Dad made me park the A and take our old IH f-20 out to plow. Shortly I lost the plow on a rock, I pulled and pulled on the gear shifter till I almost pulled it out of the transmission. Then I realized it didn't have a hand clutch and traded back for the John Deere. So you see, it works both ways.

Similar event - borrowed my nephews nearly new JD lawn tractor and leaf vac. Tractor is hydro with foot control and "cruise control" on the right fender. I was switching off between cruise and foot control. Came around a tight corner between the fence and a tree and over shot the corner. Tire went under the fence so I mashed the reverse foot control - too bad the cruise had me locked in forward. Mind you my hand is still on the cruise lever. Before my brain could telegraph my hand to pull back I hit the fence. The inertia pushed me and my stupid hand forward and my foot under the clutch. There I sat tight to the fence wheels spinning lookin' dazed and cornfused. Hope nobody saw me! Note to self HANDS OFF THE CRUISE CONTROL!!

One of my favorite stories is actually opposite of this. We grew up with two cylinder's, so it is second nature to reach for the clutch lever and to brake with left and right feet. Anyway, we had a plow bee a few years ago, and my buddy was plowing away on his '38 G and my landlord was on his H farmall. They decided to switch tractors, as we had more tractors than drivers, and my buddy jumped on the H. Being used to the two cylinder, with a left side brake, the obvious happened, right in front of everyone. Lots of laughs when he went to press down on that left side "brake" pedal. Stopped her quick!! We still laugh about that.

not exactially the same, but our old holland (hydro) has a foward petal and a reverse petal, side by side. Our new kuboda (also hydro) has one large petal on the floor, you depress the back half to go backwards and the front half to go fowards. Sometimes i still step on nothing because i expect there to be a reverse petal there. Dont happen much, usually just when im backing a wagon or hooking up to something.

I had a similar expierence My Ferguson will stop on level ground when the clutch is put in. While Bush hogging with Father-in-laws AC-B I ran it into a tree before I found the break.

Dandeere,
Amen!
Why is it that the women always drive so fast?
my mother, sisters, wife, daughter all drive me crazy! Well, my sons are bad too, I am done with speed, I do not like it anymore, I've flown an experimental airplane, drove a dunebuggy, rode motorcycles....I like it slow anymore!

Was raised on two bangers in a two banger neighborhood, so that explains my hand clutch familiarity.

At our local threshing show I had the opportunity to drive one of those Massey Harris four wheel drives from the middle thirties. Excuse me for forgetting the model, but it skips me. It has a hand clutch on the left side, that is mounted horizontally, and you pull back to go, push forward to stop. I don't remember having any close calls with it, but it was a real excercise in concentration. Jim

I own a Case DC (left hand clutch) and a John Deere B (right hand clutch). I imagine it's quite commical to watch me switch between them. There is a frantic grabbing for the imaginary handle while my brain trys to understand why the tractor isn't stopping. If I'm working in close quarters or on a trailer I keep the correct hand on the clutch to prevent an accident. I'm only 28 so its probably not an age thing...

We had a CC Case back when I was a kid that you pushed the clutch forward to stop. Later we had a SC Case that the clutch worked in exactly the opposite direction. I can still remember from back in the fifties that with the CC I always had to give the clutch handle a couple of hard pushes to get it to release.

I know what your talking about. We have a komatsu dozer and a dresser dozer at work and they are opposites as far as brake and decelerator and I always have to think real hard when getting around buildings or hills.

Always parked the three speed car's in reverse with no problem. Hill country. Always brake with left foot on auto trany and right foot on standards cars without any problems. Learned on standards. I have reached untold number of times on my old two cly's for gas on the right side. Number series gas is on the right. The cross over things are hard to stop. My grand Dad was driving Dad's JD 70 and come to the end with a disk and pressed on the brakes and the 70 made a new gap in woven wire with three barbs.

Dad has this habit of always parking tractors in gear. I don't. So it's easy for me to tell who put a tractor somewhere. But he (almost) always reaches up and shifts to neutral before starting it.

He also has this habit of starting them from the ground (one tractor had a bad starter solenoid and he liked to get it running using a vise-grip shorted across 2 lugs.)

I bet y'all can see what's next...

He did it once. It started, he jumped back, tractor pushed a 3/4 ton pickup and a bigger tractor around and just missed the fuel barrel before he managed to run around, snag the cord and kill the tractor. Luckily no injuries or significant damage was had that day.

Don't try this at home folks. Trained perfessional. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

Despite AllaninNE's suggestion, a year later and I'm still heavy on the clutch pedal in my 826 hydro.

And I got a neighbor that had problems with buildings caving in while he was driving his first (now mine) white 4-150. Apparently couldn't get used to the fact that they don't turn real short!

The first time I ran a hydro combine I slugged it because it didn't have a clutch like I was used to. But all the work unplugging it was good for helping remember the hydro lever instead of a clutch. Lee

When we were back in high school, the neighbor kid drove a DC Case right through the side of a mobile home. Hit the left brake and spun it right around into it. Stopped'r just about at the steering wheel. His dad was just p!ssed, his uncle was so weak in the knees from thinking he could have been beheaded,he had to go home without saying a word. With me,the problem is with a D2 Cat. The clutch is the opposite of normal. You pull back to go,push it ahead to stop. Get that puppy up on top of the bunker silo, near the back and it keeps you on your toes paying attention.

I have to prep my brain before I drive my MM UTU w/hand clutch.Especially in tight situations like backing up to auger or in shed.

I just CANNOT get used to it after driving foot-clutch tractors all my life.~brad

nope, your not the only one, I was actually putting my john deere B away, its on steel, which really doesnt make a difference,

I was getting close the the shed, and was going to back it in, so I heading away from it to get the angle, I started pushing on the left brake,, "clutch" in my mind ,,for a moment I couldnt realize why it wasnt stopping!!

luckily there was nothing in front of it,, but thinking back I did that a few times,,, I dont drive the tractor tat often, and instincts say clutch = left foot,,,,

dont feel left out,, I am one too, have a great day pat

I rented a D4 Cat one time to push back snowbanks. Pedal steering!!!! I picked it up at a neighboring farm and was driving it down the town road when the owner's daughter came blasting by me in her pickup. I instinctively jammed the left pedal down, thinking it was the clutch. That thing came around sideways in the road so fast I didn't have a chance to be scared, missed her back bumper by about a foot. I was real careful with it after that, managed top get through the next two days without any more mishaps.
