My Buddy sent this to me today real funny even if its true.
Walt

Top this for a speeding ticket: Two California Highway Patrol Officers were conducting speeding enforcement on I-15, North of MCAS Miramar. One of the officers was using a hand held radar device to check speeding vehicles approaching near the crest of a hill. The officers were suddenly surprised when the radar gun began reading 300 miles per hour. The officer attempted to reset the radar gun, but it would not reset and turned off. Just then a deafening roar over the treetops revealed that the radar had in fact locked onto a USMC F/A-18 Hornet which was engaged in a low flying exercise near the location. Back at the CHP Headquarters the Patrol Captain fired off a complaint to the USMC Base Commander. Back came a reply in true USMC style: Thank you for the message, which allows us to complete the file on this incident. You may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the Hornet had detected the presence of, and subsequently locked onto your hostile radar equipment and automatically sent a jamming signal back to it. Furthermore, an air to ground missile aboard the fully armed aircraft had also automatically locked onto your equipment. Fortunately the Marine Pilot flying the Hornet recognized the situation for what it was, quickly responded to the missile system alert status and was able to override the automated defense system before the missile was launched and your hostile radar was destroyed. Thank you for your concerns.

I have to question it. I have heard essentially the same tale, but it was the British Airforce in the one I heard.

Are you an officer? Got a source to back that statement up?

If no police ground radar goes over 199mph, how do people "test driving" their supercars get radar confirmation they're going as fast as they are? I know they use GPS-Sats at times, but i've seen them use Radar/Lidar on occasion, too.

Not trying to cause trouble...I'm just interested to know...

Forgot to mention the Jugs Sport Radar and the Stalker Sport Radar units. These are stationary types that are designed for the Nascar fans. They are capable of more speed than the police moving radar units. These are not federally authorized for use as speed enforcement.

While in the USAF, we used to test the tracking on the captive AIM-9 missile. We would track cars on the other side of the active on the perimeter road. One day I got the bright idea of tracking an A-6 on approach to the 1-6. Made a lot of people unhappy, including the flight suit insert of the A-6. Boy, can that A-6 move...

An EA-6B from the navy can melt that radar into junk for the fun of it too. Radar and comm jamming is it's primary job. Fellow could be hanging on to a real smoking gun.

Trust me, this is not a true story. There are multiple reasons that I will not get into here. But take my word, it doesn't happen. There is no police ground radar that goes over 199 miles per hour for one.

...police radar doesn't "track" or "lock" as an aircraft does, it simply 'measures'. Highly doubtful the hornet's radar would pick up such a small signal. ANY hornet doing only 300 mph in a 'tactical' scenario would be "dead" soon. A funny story but just that. It IS true that -some- jammers from -some- aircraft WILL fry certain radars.

According to the guys at Edwards AFB that IS a true story, at least thats what they tell me.

Another one they like to talk about is the time some of the guys were late getting back to base and the local CHIPS did a similar thing catching several of them speeding and issued tickets.
Later, a couple of the Pilots, returning from a testing mission, Flying a C130 with fancy radar jamming equipment they were testing, BUZZED the CHIPS, and back fed the radar with enough watts to see the smoke roll out as the CHIPS jumped from thier car.

I spend a lot of time working with electrical techs from Edwards, and thats what they tell me.

That is almost as good as the response the BLM (or the like) got from the beavers that built the dam on the farmers land.
