I am looking at an International 784 & was wondering if it was a good tractor? Any pros/cons of this model that would help me in my decision. Anything I should be watching out for? It has a cab, snow blower & quick attach bucket. What would something like this be worth?

I am also not sure why 100 HP is the magic number, many farms "here" use 60 - 80 HP size tractors to handle round bale silage, some of those bales can be almost a ton.

One dairy farm was using a CIH 495 2wd w/allied loader for all their loader work including round bale silage....traded for a CIH C60 fwa w/alo loader, stayed with smaller tractor but got fwa.
I've handled 4x4 round (hay) bales with our 495 2wd w/2200, no extra rear weight (rears are loaded though) and it wasn't tipsy or light.
A 484/485/495/3220 is a three plow tractor "here" we pull 3 x 12" with ours in clay sod.
A 784 is certainly a capable tractor with a great heritage. Wouldn't worry about fwa unless you are in mud and snow lots, in any case you can't go wrong on a loader tractor with fwa....

$15K "here" would be a quite reasonablel for a "late" 784 fwa w/2250 loader and decent hours.

i have a 784 row crop (38" rear tires and long spindles) and dad has a 784 ?utility? (30" rear tires and shorter front spindles). they run cheap. both have 2250 loaders. dad's has a much stronger front axle in the knee "joint". i know prices are up, but $15500 sounds way too high to me, even for 4wd.

Should be a good tractor, D-246 4cyl diesel, 67 PTO HP, syncro trans, shifters on left great for loader, foot throttle, independent hydraulic PTO.

Early ones have an inline shifter, late ones H pattern.

Lots of difference between the 484 and 784. 784 is twice as big. Has different rear end and axles I too have a 484, and they are good little tractors.

Same rear, but you could get either flange or bar axles. A 784 is not twice as big, not even close!. Bigger engine and bigger wheels is what you get.

The 484 is a much different beast than the 584 and up. Different rear end, different hitch, different engine, different front end. Its a completely different tractor.

The 784 is a good machine, if 4wd, there were 3 different axles available under the front. I think the ZF was the better of the bunch.

The shifters tend to get a little messed up on older units with a loader, the rails get worn and can get out of sync and jam in low range.

My next door neighbour has a 585 and a 484 that I spend a good bit of time working on.

Around here a cab, 4wd and loader make a 784 worth nearly 20,000 at a dealer if the hours aren't too crazy.

Thanks for your input 495 man. Any others have anything good/bad to say about it? Would it be a good tractor to feed round bales (1400#) with the loader?

Yes, the 784 will handle any roll of hay. They are a lot more tractor than that 484 he is comparing it with, It likely even has the 38 inch cast wheel centers on it like the big tractors have. It is a good sized tractor and will do everything you want. Go to tractor data.com and look at the difference of both. 484 is a 2 plow tractor, and the 784 will handle 4 in some places and 3 anywhere. No comparison to the 484.

Alot of 784 came with 30" wheels, others came with optional 38". The wheels made a lot of difference in how much they could pull. The rear end is the same for the 484 and up, mine has 28" rears. They are not twice as big like you claim. There is only about 1,100lbs of difference and thats all in the different wheels/tires and engine. The way mine is weighted it weighs what that 784 does and its still not the dream machine for handling the big stuff.

I should have said twice the tractor which it is. My 584 is will pull twice as much as my 484. I have put several thousands of hours on both, and the 484 does not compare to the 584 and larger. Anyhow, the 784 will handle a loader and roll of hay as my 584 has done it for years. I have only replaced tie rod ends once in that time. Has almost 8000 hours on it. I wouldn't try it with my 484 as it has a swept back axle on it. I do have a old Freeman loader on the 484 and have used it in a pinch to load rolled hay with.

I'd say 1,400lbs on the loader is going to be rough on the front axle and you would need some weight on the rear. Traction is going to be an issue in mud/snow. I think you would be better off with something a little bigger if your going to move bales that big with it. When I think of all the ways you might have an accident while tring to move a huge bale with what is basically a small utility, it scares me. I would suggest something along the lines of the Deere 6000 series or a Case IH 5000 series. Maybe a IH 706 or something, just something bigger that has more weight and could more easily move those bales safely and more reliably.

If you ask me, its about all its worth considering a 2wd could be had for less than $10,000 with a loader. For you, 4wd would be a big help and the axle problably would have more strength. I still suggest something a little larger like a Maxxum.

I have stretched every possible $$ I could to afford $15-16k for a tractor. I can understand why you are recommending some thing bigger, but my back pocket ain't that big, so I have to try to find something that will not only meet all my tractor needs, but fit in my budget. I feed 2 big bales of hay per week & need to snow blow a 1/4 mi. driveway & mow/dig post holes in the summer along with other misc. loader work.

The 784 is plenty of tractor. Folks think you need at least 100 HP for anything nowdays. That is not the case. The 784 will serve you well.

That is way to expensive for a 784. That is overpriced in my opinion. You should be able to pick up a 784 for less then 9000.00. I would keep looking...
