Well I made several phone calls. One to the State Police Post Liutennant, he was helpful as the common cold. Then I called the State Police post Commander. Captain Ron Clarke, he seemed concerned and said he would get back to me, took my number and ticket number. And lastly Cheif Administrator for All Posts Brenda Dittrich, she was very concerned. So i will update when I hear something. But...if you get a chance look at their website it states the law or rules anyway. Go to www.michigan.gov/sos, then on the L.H. side click on (owning a vehicle), then when the next screen appears look in the middle for (renewing your plate) click on that. Then lastly look for the underlined words (late fee) and click on it and read it. But to Billy in Ny reply, on our tickets you can only plea guilty or not guilty. if guilty you pay if Not Guilty you have to appear in court. Meanwhile I got my new plate tabs on the truck.

You can say that again. I have one of those next door! He follows my friends out of the neighborhood at 5am (when they would come over to feed their horses) in the morning with the lights off just to make sure they stop at every stop sign even though he is many miles out of his jurisdiction. He even had his wife come over to have a talk with me about my dogs barking when his dogs bark all day long. Not to mention that in the 3 years they have lived next door I have seen them do nothing more then feed their dogs and put them back into their pen when they escape! The animal control guy that came out was really nice. He said that they only have jurisdiction over Dogs. He told me to get a bunch of roosters! Well, I have a lot of poultry now!

The best though was when my neighbor across the street was working in the yard and the cop dropped his motorcycle leaving for work (He's a Motorcycle Cop) he tried to pick it up on his own and couldn't. My neighbor saw that smiled and kept tending to his yard! He is the ONLY sour apple in our community everyone else is very friendly and always willing to help a neighbor!

Joe

PS. Since he sent his wife over to have a talk with me about the dogs he earned the nick name Chief Squaking Squaw in the neighborhood!

I got pulled over in NE taking nephew's club calves to the fair, had bought current stickers but forgot to put them on. NE DOT boy called IA computer which said I had never bought stickers so I got a ticket for expired registration. Went home found current stickers called courthouse in county where ticket was issued, they said just bring in proof before court date on ticket no problem. It was an hour drive so I waited til I needed to go any way and went to straighten it out. County attorney said he would waive the $10 fine but not the $45 costs, because proof had to be brought in within 10 days. I said that was not what I was told when I called this courthouse, he said sorry all you can do is come to the court date and argue with the judge. Did not want to drive 2 hours again and probably lose any way so I coughed up $45 and got my tough $h!t card punched. Lee

Well, if you knew where the barracks was, and it might've been in kind of close proximaty to where the trooper pulled you over, a nice gesture might've been to drive over to see them and show them that you have resolved the issue of expired plates by producing a new registration. Then might've explained that DMV was closed the day they expired as a holiday, as well as the day after, and been really been really nice, friendly, and courteous. Troopers aint bad folks out to hang everyone, at least most aren't.

Posting their names here... Hmm. Escalating past the barracks commander before giving him a chance to resolve this matter after he said he'd give it attention... Hmm. I'm certain that all will turn out in the long run, but might have to extend your cooperation more than you had planned. One thing's for sure, if any of them own tractors and ever frequent this site for help or relaxation before this matter is resolved after naming them all... Get a haircut and don't showup wearing your favorite concert T-shirt. Hmm.

I didn't see in either of your posts where you said that you DID renew your plates today though. You DID renew your plates today during all of this, didn't you?

If you had simply renewed the tag the Friday before then you wouldnt be going through all this. You knew it was going to expire and yet you made no effort to take care of it before it expired? What made you think the ywould be open the 31st anyways? maybe you could have taken the time to call ahead and see? Not trying to be rude or harsh, but seems to me a litle palnning ahad would have been in order.now youre wasting your time and others for yuou laziness. Sorry, but around here people do this all the time and blame everybody but themselves.

I was stopped for speeding back in about 99. I got a warning to not drive 58 or 57 but to drive 55. Couple months later a co-worker was upset about being stopped. He said the jerk even asked him if this was his car? I jokingly said that he (trooper) was after me. We both drove blue Buicks

That Sept. I came over a hill and saw the trooper driving home. I got stopped for doing 57 or 8 and got a ticket for driving without a license. He had seen that the address was wrong on my license and pulled me over on a bogus speeding charge just to see if I had renewed it and then would not let me drive my car home.

I once got a Parking ticket from San Diego on my new 1978 Saab 99. The license on the ticket was the one that came in the mail that I never put on the car because I had already ordered personalized plates for it.
I lived in Monterey co. some 400 miles to the north and had never driven this car In San Diego or near it.
I called them and they said I could pay the ticket or fight it in court no other options were available to me.
My wife wrote the governor and within a week we got an apology from San Diego. Funny how they listen to Governor.
Walt PS The city was going though new plates and writing parking tickets to out of area residents in hopes that they would pay the small fee rather than fight it.

Well, Kansas finally got it figured out. Used to be in Kansas that a truck tagged at 24000 or more had the tag expire on Dec. 31. Every year I would get a renewal notice before the end of the year. The renewal notice would say "Tags cannot be purchased prior to 12/31". It clearly says on the tag it expires 12/31. The catch is that on the heavy trucks the tag didn"t actually expire until 2/15. But because they used the same tag/sticker system as on cars and light trucks, there was confusion. Many times I was stopped on the first or second of January for expired tags. I would explain to the officer what the situation was. They didn"t want to listen. They would start writing the ticket. Just as they were about to hand me the ticket, I would ask them to call into the state or county and check. They usually would. Then because they were embarrassed that they didn"t know the law, usually they would keep me there for a lecture. Normally they would say, "next time get those tags renewed early". Duh...(see above????) Duh.

About 3 or 4 years ago, they started giving us a sticker that correctly says the plate expires in Feb.

Really, so in Michigan you have to appear for a not guilty plea for a non moving violation like this, expired plates/registration is usually not that big of a deal here they'll obviously write you for it, but it's kind of one step above a parking violation, I don't think you would have to appear over here in NY, should be able to mail it in regardless of the plea, I could be wrong, funny how things are so different from state to state. If you plead not guilty to a moving violation via mail in plea here, they'd send you a notice for your appearance date, as you'd be going to trial unless you had an attorney represent you to see if it could be reduced prior to the appearance. Well hopefully it gets tossed based on what you mentioned about having until the next business day after an expiration on a holiday, best of luck to you on it !

Forgot to mention that an expired plate over here is usually not that big of a deal, as long as you have a valid insurance card and your policy is current, otherwise without the insurance you have to turn in the plates immediately, if you don't they used to fine you per day without insurance, something like this happened to me a few years ago while I was away, I did not have to pay a fine, but they would not allow me to re-register the vehicle for a specified period of time. It's just best to stay up on these things and have your registration/insurance card/drivers license at arms length in every vehicle you own. Personally I hate leaving anything visible to draw attention to the law enforcement people, all those little things like lights and such, inspection sticker, better to keep it legit, if you don't it just becomes a hassle, sometimes costly too.

Yea, I got one for an expired tag a few weeks ago by the Maryland State Police. 60 dollar fine, and I have a clean record. What bothers me is that yes, I was wrong, but how about a warning? I drove right to the MVA that minute to fix it. Its not like I am a criminal, and less than one mile from where they pulled me over people are dealing crack cocaine. I realize around here they are not here to protect and serve, its to "collect more money".

I did write a complaint letter, since they pulled me over on a part of the road (near Washington DC) that was very dangerous for me and the Policeman who wrote it up. I had to drive almost a mile to find a place to even pull over.

Check out all our red light cameras too... More money for the state and the body shops. Way more rear end collisions now with trucks and cars at red lights....

Yes, you are right in a way because they can"t get money from criminals (except the rich one"s) so they always go after the guy with money.

From what is stated on the SOS website you can renew your plate on the next business day without being charged a late fee. However it does not say that you can drive on the expired plate. 35yr. MI. resident before moving to KY.

This is what is says on their web site, it is not too clear, but I would take it as the expiration date is extended to the next business day to drive with and/or not pay the late fee. I amy be wrong, but that is the way I take it. I would call the county court in which the ticket was issued, ask them what to do, in Illinois, not matter who wrote the ticket, you pay the ticket to the court in the county the ticket was written in.

"If a license plate expires on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the expiration date of the license plate is extended to include the next business day before assessing a $10 late fee."

That law on assessing 10.00 is a law so the license department can not charge you the extra for coming in late to get tags. Is not a law to drive with expired tags. "Retired officer here"

that is the bad part about "laws" The are subject to interpitation by the person reading it. As a Retired officer, you know what I mean, a good friend of mine is a retired local officer and he told me that you can take 1 law, and there can be 5 differant ways to enforce it. >)

Someone kinda got on to you for waiting till the last minute, but I can't believe there is a person alive who has not done the same thing. It happens.

Dont know if you have heard farm commentator Derry Brownfield out in your area, but he is on the radio quite a bit and is always railing on these hidden taxes. If you think about it, all of this is about revenue. Think of all the licenses, fees, property tax, drivers license fee, hunting license, fishing license, tolls, you name it. We get taxed to death!!! Its all about money.

They tax you the same way here in MD and keep raising the sales tax and put another $2.00 tax on
a pack of cigarets. You can shop in Delaware where there is no sales tax and now MD have roadrunners out checking MD cars coming back from DE. They stopped my nephew bringing a recliner home that he had just picked it up being repaired.
He showed them the repair bill and they left. He had bought it new in DE when it was new. Hal

Our county seat passed a law banning Ohio Excise Police from their city limits. Indiana liquor prices are lower than Ohio's, and the Ohio cops would sit and watch Indiana liquor stores and pull people over when they crossed over into Ohio.

Banning out of state cops has already passed a federal court challenge.

Too bad we don't have a law in MD like that. Now MD has an agreement with DE not to deliver any large purchases into MD unless they collect the MD sales tax on the items coming into MD. The salesman at Sears and Lowes in DE said to get around that is to pick up the items at their stores. The Duponts in DE must add a lot to DE's economy is the reason there's no sales tax.
MD increased their sales tax to 6% starting today and according to the paper most stores don't have their equipment set up to automatically charge for the increase. Most of these states are wasting their taxes they collect. They need to
survive on what they get like each homeowner does.
The Federal government does the same thing. Hal
