Needing to do an engine swap on a sawmill.Currently has a 4-71 Detroit that has gone south.I have found an 8v-71 in a truck that I can buy ,Engine runs good other than smokes when first cranked but clears up when warmed up [typical Detroit] Question is,will the bell housing between the two have the same bolt pattern and diameter for I need to swap the hand clutch from the 4 to the 8 to be able to start and stop the mill and to be able to keep my v-belt pulley It got dark on me before I could do any measuring

You will just have to measure and see if they are the same. I feel sure both are SAE housings bul likely are different numbers. I've had a 1952 630 GMC with a 4-71 for the last 34 years and I thought about repowering it with a 6v-71 or a 6v-92 but I guess I've backed out. I guess I will just retire it or let it find a new home some day.
