Broke down and bought a set of chains to put on those 18.4x38.

We got ice under the snow this year and I couldn't get anywhere trying to move the snow or just to get up a little hill.

Now she has bite.

If I am understanding you. One can cut some chain so, so many inches or foot long. Then use tarp ties in X across wheel and behind wheel to hold them on ok??

I use the rubber straps on the outside to hold them tight from flopping. I get that snow plow going pretty fast !

No, the tarp straps are only to take up slack on a set of chains so they don't flop around so much. Chris

Yep, the road patrol/grader with a V-plow on the front is what the county uses in ND as well. Highway deparment has 2wd truck loaded with sand.

Kinda the reason Dad went green and MFWD - resale value. Ten years from now that tractor will probably be worth 90% of what we paid... the 2590 Case behind it is only worth what the loader would bring, or about 20% of what we paid ten years ago without the loader... The green dealer has been better to us lately, as well. third party image

Nice job on the repaint, then!

And just to be a smart-alec... this works better in the snow:

The cows won't be gone till the hay is gone.

The way I got if figured there's enough hay here to feed the cows for 4 winters if I sell 20 head of cows a year. (tax reasons)

Started feeding 10 to 20 year old idiot cubes out of the barn this winter. Theres about 4000 of them things in the barn.

I'm not going to reseed any new hay or pasture and the 120 acres of hay and pasture I have now will be wore out in 3 years. Am plowing 60 acres of it this spring to put more corn and beans in.

Thats the plan right now anyway and is subject to change depending on what the cattle and corn markets do.

And the day I buy horses.Oh, I won't go there.

Wide tires give good traction and floatation on loose soil, but just slide on ice... narrow tires put more weight per square inch and better traction on ice... but there is no beating those chains!

That is a nice looking 1086! Is it original or repainted? We would like to repaint ours, but it gets used so much that there just isn't time to do the prep work...

I repainted it about 3 years ago.

Not bad for 29 years old.

After getting a bunch of advice on here about chains, I have found that on my tractor they work better when they are looser. I had tarp straps on them at first but they weren't near as effective. When they are a little loose, they will kind of self clean everytime the chain comes up off the ground. If chains are on a truck or something faster, then they would need to be tighter. Dave

I bought a set of Norse Super Stud chains and on the card inside, it said that you should be able to get your fist between the sidewall and the chain. Any tighter and they are too tight.

The bigger a tractor is the more helpless they seem to be on snow and ice.

Get some rubber tarp straps and hook accross the chains for tighteners go from one side to the other in an X

Man, I could't handle snow like that, we might get 6 inches or so when we get it on average. I'd much rather fight the heat in summer than the snow and cold in winter. If it flurries around here they shut the schools down. lol

Tire chains are the way to go. They provide the best traction on ice and snow. Hal

Front wheel assist works, too. I don't imagine chains and much high speed road travel are a good combination.

Front wheel assist don't work on ice in the hills. Also not much good if you have a load behind you. There is no replacement for good old steel.

They use road graders for plowing snow and have chains on all of the drive tires. They move very fast on the road. Hal
PS: Years ago we used tire chains on our car to get into town and in and out of our lane. They never plowed all the snow off the road.

When your beneficiaries sell your tractor? I intend to have my kids use the loader, dig a hole and bury me and the tractor together!

Well that might work too. Will be a big hole though, because instead of a loader I have a 12 foot blade. I live a half mile from the cemetery I will be buried in and own land on three sides of it. I am not afraid to go there (to stay), I just don't want to go tonight. (not quite an original line). Actually in our community a grave diggin is a tradition and is done by hand, even if the ground is frozen.
