Since this is my first real tractor of my own. I do have many questions. I hope you all do not find
me in a negative way. I am trying to remember and copy and paste stuff in files that might help me down the line.
Plus it's kind of nice to talk to others who have the same interest and not BS like some chat areas.
There is just a lot to learn I see and figure it will take me months if I am lucky to have half the knowledge I see many here have. Thank You

Like Keith said below, tho only dumb question is the one not asked. Tractors are fairly complex machines and you are wise to get all the information you can.

Larry,

Saw your other post below. I am in SC. Color on Long is not Ford blue but close. If you are just painting pto shield I would get a spray can of Ford blue and apply it, or you can Google Farmtrac and get a listing for the Long, now Farmtrac, dealer nearest you.

Larry I ran across this site about six months ago when I bought my first tractor at 48 years old. Not a farmer, just wanted a tractor. Hauled one home, bought the manuals to read and try to look at this site as much as I can cause there is alot of information these guys are willing to give. And best thing is, it's free.I live in a rule area and ride it around a couple times a month (like a kid with a new toy) and haven't had any repairs yet but when I do I know where to go to ask questions. There seems to be some really nice guys on this site. As for spelling, thank god for spell check and the dictionary because I'm the worse there is. Besides the brain doesn't really look at all the letters in a word it just skims over the words, recognizes them and keeps on going. Hope you have a great 2008

Thanks for your comment. I am not really a farmer either.. some chickens and 3.1 acres only
that need a brush hog on them cause of all the rocks that grow there. Let it rain and up pops more. LOL Oh well... Have torn up a couple of riding mowers trying to do it this year.

Larry like a lot of others have said, WHO CARES about the correct spelling of a particular word. Just ask your question or jump in here if you know something that MOST of us don't know. Correct spelling does not get the tractor or machinery fixed. Most of the people on here know what you are trying to put across regardless of spelling or grammer...

I have a son that was born with a handicap cannot read nor write, and sometimes I have to listen to him really close to get what he is trying to tell me. But there are some things he can do far better than me.

Tractors are like a job the day you stop learning more about them is the day they put you under , but some people Know everything about everthing , thise are the ones the ones that can't do anything . I worked a job for 30 years liarned something new every day day I worked up to last day boss gave me last day off with pay .
I worked with a guy that knew it all but didn't do anything I had to do mine and his to .

You know I knew a few guys who could tell you if x being the factor and Y being the etc etc. But they never seem to have any common sense when it come to everyday life problems. One did not even know how to check his own engine oil on stick. He was a smart mouth to. So I showed him and when he left I just shook my head. :) Have a nice New Years evening.

English isn't even my first language and I prefer to use english English so I couldn't care less about spelling.

My thoughts in reply to Larry59, 12-27-2007 21:02:46
I want to thank each and everyone of you. For the nice replies back. :)
Plus information given. Like I did not know one might get a "Parts Manual" for a tractor. Got the operations manual now. But in it there are things explaining on the tractor I have not understood good. But getting there. What got me kind of feeling bad was the spelling comments. I am the one who was spelling DIESEL wrong and did not know I was. :( Because of my disabilities I now have. Spelling bad is one of them that I live with. Once I was a great report writer that any thing I wrote would stand up in court. Many others would come to me just to help them write theirs. So they would not look like a fool or lose a case. I even knew "html" and "java" for computers and did web sites for many a friend.
But that is all gone now for me. So I do the best I can are ask my wife if she is close bye. There are times I think the word is correct and don't ask about it. Looks right!
Because of my disibilites, spelling is the least of my worries most the time. Other problems over ride that big time. ... So again I thank you.

There is no such thing as a dumb question, I know it sounds cliche, but we all need help, If you don't know the answer it's impossible to solve problems without questions. I have only been on this sight for about a year and recognize a lot of the names now and it's amazing how the same people will always help and the same people seem to feel it is necessary to ridicule and demean people. Just ignore the unnecessary. Have a good one.

I'll second that No Dumb Question thing. I'm in my 50s,been farming with the same kind and in some cases, model of tractors that I rode on my Dads lap on as a little tyke. I still call my self "dumb a$$" for missing simple little things all the time.

Larry, hope you enjoy your first tractor. Let me give you some early advice. 1. Get an Operator Manual for your tractor. Read it. Learn to perform routine maintenance per the manual. Check fluid levels, etc. 2. Buy a Repair Manual from your dealer in the real brand of your tractor. Browse the contents just to get a little familar with it. Set is aside for future use. 3. Buy a Parts Manual from your dealer. You will use it later for making sure you get the correct parts, and for looking at the detailed expolded veiws for reasembly. The money you spend for these 3 manuals will be the best money you ever spend on your tractor. Tom

Larry Let me just say this, there a some on here who may choose to ridicule you for not knowing something. But I assure you for every one like that there are 10 that are willing to help you learn. So ask the questions, over look those that ridicule, and accept the help of those that are willing to help. I have learned a lot from these guys and I appreciate them all.

Larry, just ask away, the only dumb or stupid question is the one that is not asked. There is a lot of knowledge and experience to be had on this forum. Sometimes I have seen a few negative responses to a question, you just have to take the few with a grain of salt. Each and everyone of us had to START at the BEGINING!!!

Well let me say this. The day you think you know it all on tractors is the day you die. Why do I say that well I find I can always learn more and a good day is one that I learned something new.
