Hello! was santa good to everyone?1. I was wondering with the rising price of gas what effect does that have on the value of collectors tractors? 2. What state do you think retains the best value for these tractors. the deer hound.

I think you have hit on something there. The last few auctions I have been to the pre 1960 stuff seemed to have few buyers. Collectors are collecting the 60's, 70, 80's tractors that they grew up with. Just like muscle cars are hot, the old model T's don't get that much attention. I would say that the really old stuff, and steamers are an exception. But the steamers cost so much to buy and transport, very few individuals can afford them. But the supply is pretty limited, too. If you have something like a 1919 auto cultivator, it's really a piece of history and will probably end up in a museum.

I don't think that fuel prices are really having that big an affect on tractor sales.
In my opinion you have a lot of guys who have passed on and the other guys are simply getting older, this all leads to less buyers. Most of the younger guys today aren't inetrested in tractors. They are to far removed from the farm to appreciate the old tractors.

If I was paying $US3 a gallon I would be laughing,at the servo diesel is $AUD1.439 a litre and there are 4.55 litres to a gallon [imperial] about $US7.55.
Incidentially I know US gallons are smaller, could you give me a comparison eg 10 lb in a gallon of water[imp],weight of a pint.etc US.

If I'm not mistaken, water @ 60 degrees F is 8.44 #/gal.

I don't know for sure how it has affected everone else, but in my case it has affected what kind of tractor I'm going to restore and show. I don't plan on anything I can't haul with my 16' tandem axle trailer(3500# axles) and my 1/2 ton truck. I need the truck for other things on my small farm, but I don't need a 3/4 or 1 ton. That being said, I'm planning on going to the same shows as always which are mostly within a 150 mile radius. I still use my 1948 JD D on the farm, but thinking about that 3 to 4 gallons per hour is not a relaxing thought.

For me, trying to sell tractors out of ND, the rising cost of fuel has hurt tractor values... the cost of hauling cross-country can exceed the value of the tractor quite easily...

If there was local interest, then I would say fuel prices haven't affected tractor values at all.

Not to worry deer hound,I can't see that the price of gas would have any effect on the old girls, unless you are buying one to use on a daily basis, then you would prefer a diesel, which have been in some sort of production for over 50 years now,so still pretty old.Not being from the US myself,I can only assume that the only 2 states that wouldn't have an average demand for antique tractors may be Alaska and Hawaii, but that's only an outsiders assumption.Just going bu some of the posts on here, some areas seem to have a brand preference different than other areas. Some areas don't have Massey's,others love them.Almost every area has Deere's,some have Allis',other Cockshutt&Olliver.Where they are most pouplar, they would be worth alittle more than where most are alittle unfamilliar.pd.

Does have some effect on shows, however- Lots of collectors are retired, with limited incomes, and $3.00 fuel makes it tough to travel a long ways to take their tractors to shows (or even to go as spectators).
