I am exploring eliminating the water pump on my IXA series engine and converting it to a thermal Sypon. I am wondering if the drive coupling and gear on the IXB is the same as that on the IXA. The gear number on the IXB is 27195 and that on the IXA is 27195B.

Any information would be appreciated.
Below is a photograph of the A drive with attached water pump. The gear is attached, it is just not visiable from the photograph.

This is followed by a photograph of the B engine drive.

The Acorn nut is the oil pressure regulator, the tall pipe is the oil fill pipe. Alot of parts on the IX engines will interchange. Remember the primary difference between the IXA and the IXB is the size of the bore 3 inch vs 3.250. But everything you need has to be from a 5 gear engine. Cletracs all had 3 gear engines. Merry Christmas. J.

If they are both base mount mags on the left side of the engine it will probably work.

I haven't looked into any of my parts books, nor have I gone out to look at any of my engines. I have several IXAs in older Cletrac HGs. I also have several IXB3s in newer Cletrac HGs and OC3s. I also have a couple of brand-new, old-stock IXB5 power-units. They all differ a bit.

The IXAs that I'm familiar with have external mag drives via a fiber-coupling.

The IXB3s that I'm familiar with have an internal mag coupling built into the drive gear and the mag bolts directly to the engine. Also, as I recall, on the opposite engine-side.

The new IXB5s that I have here, have multiple mounings for mags as well as for a battery-distributor.

Here are a few photos of two IXBs that I happen to have on my hard drive - from my newer HG and also an IXB5 power-unit.

I have included two more photographs; The first is of the B engine and the second of the A. Both drives are mounted on the right of the engine and they appear to be approximately the same. Obviulsy the A has the water pump installed so it looks a bit different.

I am still not sure if they are compatible. Would it be usual for the gears to be diffent even though the drive appears to be the same size?

also, what is the vertial "pipe" that is above of and connected to the drive in the B photograph.

I'm not sure which pipe you mean - the engine oil pressure regulator adjustor?

The acorn nut. Another responded answered that question.

I am thinking that the two drives are the same size. The difference between the units is one has a water pump and one is thermal syphon.

Thanks for your input.
