Removing Massey Harris Hub

I am restoring a Massey Harris 44. The hubs are turned inside out, so I need to flip them around, so it is on right. I don't know why, but I cannot get it off. I have tried countless things, but I am unable to get it off. Everything is off that needs to be off, in order for it to come off. The only thing I haven't removed, is a key that is in between the hub and the axle. I don't think this has to be removed, but you never know. Please help me get this hub off. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Doug Hill of NH VT pulling fame had a very good article on this subject in Hook magazine about a year ago. He was working on a JD 4320.

I owned a 44 Massey for a few months . I also needed to remove the hubs to turn around and replace axle seals. I spent 12 hours yes 12 on the first one using heat and a puller mounted on the end of axle with 1 inch plate steel. Beating with a huge mallet and finally dropped the clutch outside with high pressure on it and it came. The next one I went and got a porta power and used the 1 inch plate as a backing against the trans. housing and came loose in about 15 minutes. You do have those outside snap rings out of there right? Migraine

I'd start by removing that key. Usually aren't those a crescent moon shape, and will only get tighter if you try to force your way around them?

Last hub I had to remove from an axle on a tractor involved lots of soaking with the penetrating oil of choice (diesel fuel, atf, kroil, pb blaster), heat, pounding with a hammer, and extreme force. What we did was got ahold of a big 3-legged puller and literally screwed the hub off. While that might not work in your situation, you may be able to use a come-along, a log chain or two, and a nearby sturdy tree trunk to apply lots of pulling power. Then heat it up and you should see it start to move when you're pounding on it.

Least, that's what I'd try.

Is your 44 a standard model with the heavy cast hubs?

heat more heat and then some more heat they can be a real pain in the you know. but heat them up real good around the flange part and pound on both sides a little each way and they should come lose be careful not to hit to hard to bust the flange
