Hi folks. The F-350 at work has a pintle hitch on the rear, and it's useless. I'd like to change it to 2" receiver type. The pintle hitch is bolted on with 4 blots, just like all of em I've seen. Northern Tool sells an adapter, but I'm not sure if it's the one that'll take care of me. Here's a picture. Thank you for any idea'rs.

That ought to work, made so you can have a few different mounting heights you can even mount it upside down.

Aloha, Ok, I think what you want is to make a square plate 1/2" or thicker to fit over your existing pintle hook mounting holes. Drill 4 holes to match the existing and get a 1/4" thick or thicker box tubing to fit the size of hitch that you want to use and weld that to the plate (drill the cross hole for the pin). You could also make your own hitch by getting the proper size tubing to fit into the receiver and weld a plate on the end to mount the pintle hook. I made my own receiver and different hitch setup for my 80' GMC pickup and it is better than any store bought one.

Mahalo,

Just get one of these Pintle ball combo hitches and bolt it right on where the pintle hitch is bolted.

ok from what im reading here i gather that the existing pintle hitch is mounted to a piece of iron going accross the rear frame of the truck, if so , is it a flat plate, angle iron or channell? any place that sells the hitch parts can get just the tube, for about 25 bucks, if you got channell iron behind the pintle, weld the tube on under the channel, your done, just buy the reciver ball drop that you need to match up to the trailer, if its flat or angle iron, get the tube designed to bolt under the step bumper of a pickup with the 3 holes in it, and weld this under the iron and make a rear support going back up to the truck frame, your done , and use the reciver ball set up you need to make the ball the right height, usually about 18" from the ground

If you have that adaptor, it goes into a standard 2 inch receiver. If there is just a plate with holes like that, bolt a combination ball and pintle hitch on. Same hole pattern as a straight pintle hitch. Easy fix but they cost a little. I prefer a pintle hitch over a ball. Dave

It's actually got the combo ball and pintle on now, but I'd like to go to a straight receiver so I can pull wagons and such with it too. Combo pintle/ball won't work for that. I think I might just buy a female receiver tube and weld it in the place of the pintle/ball hitch.

Weld the receiver in with 7018 rods and put gussets on the back side for extra strength. You should be able to buy the receiver with the extra piece of tubing around the end you put the adaptor in. Dave

I'm trying to take the cheap way out. I figured if a pintle hitch can be mounted on there, there's a way to mount a receiver.

I"ve used a pintle hitch bolted to a receiver plate like the one you show for years without any problems.

remove the pin, pull the pintle out, replace with
the type you want, straight, shallow drop ,with
the ball size you want.the receiver is already
installed. as i get the drift. shouldn't be to expensive. your local trailer dealer should have
your needs. you don't need an adaptor, the piece shown in picture comes out & not used.
good luck, sonny

No, if it were that easy I woulda done it by now. The pintle hitch is bolted to the end of the frame. I want to convert it to a receiver tube.

I used one just like that for a year or so. I didnt have a problem with it. It looked a little spungy but didnt feel like it on the road.
When I bought a cutaway Ford E 350 I cut the frame off and welded 1/2 thick angle over the end and bolted the pintle solid. That brought the load closer to the rear axle.

That's kinda what I'm worried about. That adapter put the trailer ball quite a way back from where the pintle is now.
