took in this 65 stingray at the shop, had some cracking issues in the front end. figured a little glass work here and there, some paint and good to go. whelp, front end had been pieced together (poorly at that) need to put a new front end on it. owner stopped out, well, you may as well go thru the motor and warm it up. he'd like around 400hp. weekend driver. do the clutch and the trans while you are in there too. geez, i thought i could get caught up and start putting the super m motor together.....

You never know what is under the paint on those fiberglass cars. Only a very brave or foolish person would give an estimate befor stripping it all off. The midrange stingrays are the best of all the vetts. The real bonus about working on them is that every single part is available from either GM or several aftermarket suppliers. The 327 is in my opinion the best powerplant Chevy ever made.

Just like my little H project, fix a few leaks here and there, but noooo, replace bearings, probably split the tractor for the rear main seal, and who knows what else I will find.

Good thing I am having fun!!

Randy

Remember goimg through the Whitneys catalog in the VW department. If you added up all of the % of power a part added you would have a VW with about a 5000hp engine!

With all the new after market parts for chevy a 327 should make 400hp a piece of cake.

I learned to hate those SOBs with a passion.

Worked in a Chevy garage right on the Interstate. The eggheads would come in and want ya to, "Fix that little flutter at 110mph and I'm in a hurry".

Still have the scars from pulling that hot radio shielding.

Hate 'em I tell ya, absolutely hate 'em. :>)

I never liked working on the plastic pigs myself. Pulled the engine & trans & put it in my 55 chevy. Have'nt driven it in 15+ years

Looks like a fun project with some promising results. Stingrays are the best body styles IMHO. In Michigan all the steel parts rust out and turn into crumbs while the glass panels are still in pretty good shape. An owner took me out on I-96 at 125 MPH to demonstrate a vibration issue. Got it back and looked under to find the transmission rear mount cross member hanging on by only two very loose bolts. Yikes!

Little projects always end up being bigger than you expected. I just installed a winch on my ATV so it is much easier and more fun to plow with. Well, went to a friend who is a welder and 5 hours later I now have a custom tube front bumper with roller fairlead mount and a 1/4" thick steel mounting plate. Compared to the stock mount from the dealer the frame will bend before the winch mount does. No such thing as overkill!

Looks like a good wintertime project. I have a Ford F-600 truck I have to put together for a neighbor. A body shop did the paint but went out of business before reassembling it.
