O/T diesel problems

Ok, before anyone starts on the Chevrolet diesel soapbox. I don't have a problem one with the truck, my problem is with the fuel that we are getting. The truck runs great but seems like everytime you turn around you get a bunch of water in the fuel. Its happened several times, contact with the supplier has never did anything but just waste time. I have a dual setup filter system on it as water fried 2 injection pumps so it was water blocking filter time. truck has been running great but surely I'm not the only one having water problems? The truck is a 96 one ton with 6.5 turbo diesel in it. Truck runs great, just fuel supply problems. I've thought about just having a tank brought out and putting two or three water blocking filters on it and just doign my fueling at home.

Ok, guys. Thanks for the input. Finally got out there and checked her over today, changed both the water separator filter I added on the headache rack and the main filter and she is back running. I added the water separator filter after having the first problems with the fuel and the pumps. Filters are cheaper that parts and labor!

Dan,

years ago, worked for a compnay that built a calibration machine for a filling station gas pump manufacturer. The pumps were calibrated at a certain flow rate and were not perfectly linear. We learned that at the lowest flow rates, the pump actually would pump slightly more fuel than it registered. Some of the guys I worked with still fill their cars VERY SLOWLY. But with my 34 gal tank, I don't have all day. Also, with newer pump technology, can't even be sure that it's still true.

i had that problem with a gas truck. It was leaking rain water in around the the top of the tank where the sending unit and fuel pump goes in.

I pumped everything out of the bottom of my storage tank that I bought new in 2002. After 5 years there was virtually no water in the bottom of that tank. I buy "premium diesel fuel" whatever that means. I have a water seperating filter on the pump on the storage tank. Never had any water problems. My guess is that you've identified the water source as your fuel supplier. I'd sure fix that in a hurry but you might not have good supply choices.

Ruining two pumps shouldn't of happened, regardess of the water in the fuel - unless you're using some sort of aftermarket filter system. The OEM Stanadyne primary (on a dual setut) or single filter is also a water-separater. And don't you also have a "water in fuel" sensor and warning light? And if so, how did water get through and ruin two pumps? Something doesn't sound right.

I got some bad diesel here a few years ago that was loaded with water and diesel-bacteria. This had me draining the bottom of the filter often - but never resulted in any pump damage.

I've got several Chevy diesels, also two Fords, two Isuzus, and two Volkwagens. All of them have water-separators and water sensors. The Volkswagen and my older Chevys even have water-drain valves at the fuel tank that are supposed to purged once in awhile.

Haven't heard of any water problems from my Dad and brother up in ND... or from anyone down here in NW AZ either.

I would raise a good stink with the supplier - the station would be a good place to start, they might have a problem with their underground storage tanks...

Dad always taught me to use the slowest locking position on the pump at the gas station. It takes longer, yes, but the idea is that water is heavier than the fuel so it won't pull that all the way up the pipe into the pump. Save the water for the next guy that's in a hurry.

When I did get water at the pump, I turned my gas can over and poured the bottom part into a milk jug where you can easily see the difference in color between the fuel and the water. Then you can separate them better.

i run 5 diesels and have had no trouble at all. if i was you I'd start looking at the tank on the truck might be rusted out on the top and water is getting in and not sure what filters you have but they should catch the water you have more wrong then the fuel you are getting

Tank has been off several times getting cleaned out from water problems, no problems with the tank. Thats the deal I've got going on now, the filters are doing there job but you can't spend $50.00 a week on filters.
Others have said on here that they have not experienced problems, sorry but that I just can't believe.

buy your fuel some place diffrent and change brands then see what you get. they water it down sone ware . some body makes a water amount dector. it like vegtable dye you add drops until it goes to the bottom the water holds the dye when it low water content the dye goes to the bottom the fuel wont absorb the dye. air lines use this on jet fuel.

I drove truck for a while and it seems like since Katrina hit, You just can't get good fuel anymore. On top of this you have to pay 15% more for diesel fuel than you do gasoline. I went past a Pilot Truck stop the other day, Regular Unleaded, 2.94... Diesel 3.45, which is stupid.

It's almost like they did when they did away with leaded fuel. They raised the price because they took the lead out, but THEY HAD TO ADD THE LEAD TO IT TO BEGIN WITH!!! They have to refine gasoline more than they do diesel but yet it's higher. What a crock.

The reason they put lead in the gas was to raise the octane rating in the cheapest possible way. The cheapest way to raise the octane rating of gasoline is to add tetra-eythel lead to it. Even so, that does cost money. If they have to take the lead out of gasoline what are they going to do to keep the octane up where it won't destroy your engine? That's where the extra cost comes in. We always had no lead high octane gas available for those who wanted to pay the price. Amoco white gas was one of those. I used to put that in my Olds 98 with it's 10.25 compression ratio.

That can also backfire - Dad bought a semi tanker load about a year and a half ago from one of the major suppliers here in the Panhandle...

Next thing you know, we were having trouble with every diesel on the farm. It was contaminated with algae...

They halfway made it right - but it sure has been a pain...

Tried that too. Have used several different locations for fill ups. I just don't believe you can get clean diesel.

i have a 06 chevy that was straight off the lot a year ago had 300 miles on it today it has 39200 on it and i havent had the first bit of water trouble. i probably shouldnt be on here bragging about it probably jinxed myself. i also change the fuel filter about every 8000 to 10000 miles
