Tryin' to do a little research on the area up there in the Arctic. What can you tell me about the economy, jobs, politics, home and land prices, etc.? I searched some real estate sites and WOW. Chicken feed (sorry, Dave)compared to down in IL. Ok, cost of living seems cheaper, but what are wages like? Enough work to keep a moderately experienced electrician/maintenance man busy? I appreciate any and all responses.

I live north of Bemidji. Its a college town if that means anything. Lots of min wages here. Attitude is if you don"t like the pay quit and thjey will get a college kid to take the job for min wage. Beltrami couty and clearwater county are the poverty counties of Minn. Look before you buy. One ao the bigger employer is closing down so jobs won"t be too plentiful.-Bill

I left Bemidji back in the 80's so I may be out of date on my info.

Good place to go if you have a good job waiting. I.E. Collage profesor, teacher, Lawyer, doctor, dentest, ect.
Costs are cheaper so they get to live pretty high on the hog.
They are competing for wages with the rest of the country so they still have to pay good.

For a working man.... Well not much there. A lucky few working for the Gov, Utilities, Wood products company. Other than that its fight for minimum wage jobs.

Dont get me wrong if I could find a good job in advance I would be back in a flash.

We like the area, just bought a house there, plan on retiring in the next year. I hope I don't have to look for a job in the area! Lots of retail, good medical facilities, and the fishing is good. St Cloud is getting to big for us!

Check the Minnesota forum on city-data.com...it's a website for people thinking about relocating, wondering about jobs, schools, neighborhoods, you name it. Good luck.

You're bordering on some tourist-y areas... Itasca State Park (Headwaters of the Mississippi River) is south of there about 25 miles. A little further south is Park Rapids. To the east is Bemidji.

Mainly hay farming in the area, not much for crops.

My wife has family that lives in Bagley also. I'd agree with some of the other comments about it being a somewhat "depressed" area.

All depends what you're looking for, I guess.

My Former business Partner and his wife live up in Bagley, MN. which is about 30 mi w.sw of Bemidgi(sp), and I have visited them. according to my good buddy, the area has been "depressed" for quite some time. Lots and lots of Native Americans because of the Red Lake Indian Reservation.(They are a sovereign Nation) and recieve HUGE allotments of money from our government. The thing I couldn"t stand the most was that you COULD NOT drink the water!!It is full of sulpur and the smell is awful and the taste is worse. I was told first thing by my buddy that I could only drink the filtered water from the "fridge...do not drink anything from the tap. Anybody else??

Must be why the Gov. gave it to the Indians
