A guy posted here the other day - wish I could remember his name - who still works in the old Samson factory - making trucks for GM now but the factory is still running. He said they have a restored Samson in the building.

They made crawler tractors for sure and locomotives which I think they still do. Euclid and later Terex were GM divisions. The current Terex is different from the original. Dave

Well. By golly, I never heard of a Jim Dandy, but I'm sure they existed. I know some of those JDs are dandys. I think the first Sampsons were walk behind units and they were controled by harness straps. G M make them this way to get the farmers to try them out because at that time the farmers were very reluctant to try something new. I have some pictures of them somewhere around here..... ..... RW

Yes, GM bought the Samson tractor line in 1918 and built them till 1922. Also owned the Jim Dandy line that built the Jerry line drive tractor... Gene

I knew about the Sampson, never heard of a Jim Dandy connection. What time period was that in?

GMC named the former Jim Dandy tractor the "Model D Iron Horse" in 1919. It didn't sell, lost money fast, and was dropped.

I wonder if this was during the Durant era? I can't remember the exact years, but Durant created GM out of several independent companies. He lost control, came back, and then lost control again. He ended his days owning a bowling alley in Flint, Michigan. Quite a story, probably a lot of details will never be known. GM has been in a lot of businesses over the years, Fridigedare, Terex, Allison. I was visiting an Iron foundry in Ohio, and watched them pour a crankshaft in 20 ft long. I have no idea what it was for. At that time over 30% of the plant's production was for non GM business. Some was Ford and Chrysler.
