I have a IH 424 Gas burner. PTO clutch has problems staying in gear. The small piece that actually moves the clutch seems to get about a 1/16" of wear and seems to be enough slack to actually kick the PTO out of gear. i just broke the tractor down again for about the fourth time and turned the small piece with some wear on it and managed to bushog about 50 yds. before it kicked out of gear and now will not go in gear at all. i have replaced all parts including clutch in the past two years and still seems to be wearing way to fast. any comments welcome.

I am having the exact same problem with my diesel constant-running pto. I took it to a tractor guy who said he changed the position of the engagement lever. It worked great for about 10 min. :( Is the best way to inspect all these parts to remove the top of the transmission? Having someone split the tractor sounds pretty expensive, especially since it has a loader...

Eric,

Do you have the (standard) transmission-driven PTO, or the (optional) constant-running PTO?

(Either way, the PTO disconnect clutch is the same.)

I have a 424 diesel with the continuous-running PTO. A couple of years ago, it started giving problems much as you describe.

Turned out the casting in which the PTO lever's shaft pivots was cracked, and would deflect, allowing the PTO disconnect clutch to easily "jump out of gear".

In the photo, the pen points to the part, 704 392 R91.

Might be worth checking out!

I HAD THE SAME TROUBLE ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO, THE FIRST OF 4 TIMES I HAVE BROKEN THE TRACTOR DOWN. THIS TIME THAT PART WAS NOT DEFECTIVE.

THE POINT ON PART #4 IN PHOTO THAT TOUCHES THE CLUTCH #5 IS WHAT SEEMS TO BE MY TROUBLE, IT KEEPS GETTING FLAT ON ONE SIDE.

GOOD COMMENT, THANKS

The splines on the PTO shaft may be twisted a bit, causing the "clutch" to continuously try to move rearward, causing excessive wear to the pin on the "shifter" (Key #4).

the "Clutch" is actually just a cog that slips from the non-rotating shaft onto the rotating shaft as you move the pto shift lever. the shift lever attaches to a small piece which i described above and seems to wear slighly and is enough to kick it out of gear. this piece has been replaced several time over the past few years and i know that is way to much for the small amout of mowing i do.

Ahh, Is the dog being held fully engaged by the engagement lever ? the lever gets bent and may not be holding the dog fully engaged. Once the dog gets rounded off it will not hold in very well.

Also it is not a clutch, t is an engagement lever. The clutch part is of course the 2 stage clutch in with the main clutch.

If you happen to be using the PTO lever excluseivly to engage and disengage the PTO of course it will not last.

You posted "Also it is not a clutch, it is an engagement lever. The clutch part is of course the 2 stage clutch in with the main clutch."

1.) In the partsbook, IH calls it a "clutch".

2.) Not ALL these tractors had a 2-stage clutch. The "continuous-running PTO" was an OPTION, and I don't think he's clued us in, yet, as to which he has, but, in either case, these parts are the SAME.

It is not a constant running PTO.

Not sure what you mean by clutch not staying in gear. Has your pressure plate been adjusted? These also have to be adjusted with the engine clutch best I remember. Haven't had mine apart in 20 years. The last time I replaced cultches in mine seemed like it was fairly simple, but like I say it was 20 years ago.
