The Oliver fan is correct. The Massey 98 serial numbers are mixed in with the Oliver 990, 950 and 995 serial numbers. Massey did not give them a unique serial number. The trick is you have to drop the last three numbers to get your serial numbers. The last three numbers are a spec number that describe something like your gear ratio. Usually -942, -943 or -950. With the exception of a few in 1959 almost all the Massey 98s are 1960. Since the Massey 98 is 99.8% an Oliver 990 by weight you will probably have the best luck asking questions about it on the Oliver board. How long have you had it?

Look up Oliver serial numbers, then click on model 990. That model of tractor was built for Massey by the Oliver corp. and carry Oliver serial numbers.

I'VE CHECKED THE 990 SERIAL NO'S AND THEY RANGE FROM 53001 IN 1958 TO 115469 IN 1961,THE MF98 ARE IN A DIFFERENT FORMAT, EXAMPLE AS FOLLOWS 86-952-942. I'M ASSUMING MASSEY FERGUSON HAD TO HAVE THIER OWN SERIAL NUMBERS, DIFFERENT FROM OLIVER'S

The first Oliver 990's were built in South Bend, IN. in 1958. Then production was moved to Charles City, IA. for 1959 and there after.

All Massey Ferguson 98's were built in Charles City, IA. in 1959 and 1960. Your tractor serial number 86-952 was built in 1960.
