Does a "live" PTO mean that the PTO continues running after you step on the clutch? Whats better
about it?

Baling hay or blowing snow, if you get to a heavy spot that wants to stall the tractor or overload the implement, you can push in the clutch 1/2 way, & let the thick bunch clear out because the tractor stops moving, but the implement pto continues to have power.

Or you can shift the tractor into a different gear (slower or faster) while the implement continues to have power to it.

Or for a big heavy load like a brush hog, you can push in the clutch and stop the tractor from moving, while the big heavy flywheel load (hog) takes a long time to spin down. Without live pto, the rear wheels will continue to move while the hog spins down, because they are locked together by the non-live pto.

With the hog (or a tiller or baler or snowblower) in heavy grass (etc), you can put the pto in gear, spin up the implement, and then start moving the tractor, instead of putting both in gear & the tractor needs to start spinning the implement & moving forward at the same time.

That's the usefulness of it.

Thank you for the correction... I've never operated or been around a tractor with a 2-stage clutch. Dad had a D15 Allis many years ago, but I was not operating tractors at that time (probably around 6 years old!).

You need to repair/adjust that PTO immediately! That is a danger to yourself and others. It should be able to be stopped with the lever.

If you refuse to fix it, at least turn the engine off to hook up a PTO shaft!

Steven gave the most concise definition of the three systems. Live lets you stop tractor wheel motion while MAINTAINING pto operation. AC had live since the WD and CA, by using a hand clutch. Others used a two-stage clutch to do the same thing. Independent lets you START or stop pto independent of tractor wheel motion...separate clutch between the engine and pto.

Transmission driven pto's have caught operators unaware while bush hogging etc. The operator then finds themselves under the tractor as it propels it's self into a pond, ditch etc. That's with the clutch pedal pushed down and rear wheels are still driving. Most owners can't be bothered with an overrunning pto clutch.

Here is the fully technical definitions... or at least mostly accepted definitions...

Transmission driven PTO - only works with the clutch out, if the tractor is in gear, when you stop moving the PTO stops turning. If you are running the PTO with transmission in nuetral, you will have to push the clutch and wait for the PTO to stop to get it into gear.

Live PTO - usually has a 2-stage clutch, pushing the clutch halfway stops the tractor from moving, but the PTO keeps running. In order to put into gear or shift gears you have to push the clutch all the way down, stopping the PTO. These can also have a hand clutch that will stop the tractor from moving and leave the PTO running, but you can't shift gears without stopping the PTO.

Independent PTO - just like the name implies, the PTO is completely independent of the clutch and gears, you can stop, shift gears, etc. and the PTO will keep running.

As far as IH is concerned, there was LIVE PTO on some imported models and the Super MTA and newer all had Independent PTO as an option.

I believe Allis Chalmers had models with live PTO.

If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me...

I have to take exception with one thing you said. There is no need to disengage the second stage clutch to shift gears if it is adjusted properly.

What does the Farmall 560 have? Ours runs constantly anytime the engine is running, regardless of the lever position, unless you push it past stop and hold it awhile. Then it must be held to the limit while an attachment is connected.

I know the cockshutt 30 has a live pto, it uses a shaft inside a shaft to drive the pto and tranny separately.

Dan: Your PTO is wore out or out of adjustment.
560's ect have bands thats stop a certain part of a planitary gear set. Depending on the placement of the handle.

Get a manual so you can read how to adjust them. There are adjustment screws on it.

If its wore out. try to buy a whole used unit if you can as new bands cost $250 each for the 2 you need.

That sounds awfully dangerous. If the person holding the lever down were to slip, the PTO shaft would spin while the person attaching the shaft has it in their hands. I would think there is a PTO brake that needs attention.

Yes, the pto is independant of the clutch for the transmission. Same for live hydraulics. What's better is that if you're doing something like baling hay and you come to some heavy windrows, you can slow down your tractor speed with out stopping the baler. Same if you are bush hogging and you come to a thick patch, you can slow down your travel speed so you don't overload the mower.

For reduced speed, it's better to shift down a gear, rather than ride the clutch. That's not good for 'em, typically.

Not that I'm saying anything new, just needs to be said.

I don't have a live or independent on my Farmall M, so it's a moot point for me. But my next tractor will.
