Seems to me the loader is the trick, yes a little shakey with single acting cylinders. The way I see it raise the loader to full height, cut two lengths of angle iron to lay on cylinder rods, this locks both sides fixed, now you have a stationary point to use your chain hoist as earlier suggested.Postion tractor and power unit behind the Gleaner hook up sling and raise with chain hoist. Now with a second tractor pull Gleaner in under hanging power unit.Trying to position hanging weight gets so risky,I have done plenty of it.Any time you can raise load and not have to "move it" the better. I have even done this when unloading extra heavy freight off of freight carriers.I lift, they pull forward, then I set down to gain more control. This way also would allow you to be on the machine to position engine as you lower into place. I wish you well, after viewing all of your posts over the last several years I am certain you were the origination of "If there is a will there is a way!

Know anybody with an old amish-style peg barn? Horizontal crossbeams in the top of mine look like 10x10s. Hey, if our 510s go under it, that should.

Local scalper has some gadget, looks like a gin pole boom that goes on a 3pt. kinda like this but with a hydraulic cylinder for more range:

I have one I picked up at an auction a few years ago. It was home made, with a 12 foot extention for it. Would work great for this job. If Allen was a little closer I'd let him borrow it. Guy who had it built it to set 40 foot trusses for his pole barn with a 4955. I had to modify it to fit on a class II 3pt.

I like the backhoe idea. Precise control.

Plan B: remove fuel tank and railing. Set the cradle up on the tail and pull it forward with ratchet straps.

Plan C: Stack up about 30 small square bales against the combine and top it with a double layer of plywood. Set the engine cradle up there on some pipe rollers and pull it aboard from the other side.

Gonna be fun.....

I was thinking of coming in dead center to the side of the machine. Thing ought to slide right in there, I'm thinkin'.

Although, I did notice that they had taken the old motor off of the left side of the combine.

Either way, it's gonna be kinda interesting. :>)

Oh,

I'll get it for sure; just don't quite know how yet. :>)

The tricky part is that I've got to keep the loader bucket high enough to clear the stacks as well as stay above and away from that bin extension.

If neither of the little loaders will do it, I'll put that old F-10 back on the 686 and hook up that old hay sweep head. I know darned well it will go high enough 'cause it'll reach the top of an REA pole.

The engine just doesn't seem that heavy to me after unloading it the other night. 800 to 1,000lbs maybe?

Dunno, cross that bridge the day I get to it, I guess. :>)

Looks like a heavy load for one loader. Might try one loader on each side , since it looks like you've got two of them. Then roll the combine inbetween the two. Loaded lots of heavy stuff on flat bed trailers with two forklifts like this. Just a thought.

My first thought, before reading the posts was- you have a Farmhand, right?- lifts about 21 feet? Then, saw your pix. Granted, could use a little more forward reach. Running the chain across the top of your grapple crosspieces would give you about 2 feet more reach. Otherwise, a simple gin pole attached to the front. Couple pipes slipped over the teeth, pulled together in a vee, weld together, with a brace or chain to the top of the grapple or loader frame.

What about finding some nice piece of land and digging a big hole (not to burry it, though) and rolling it down into the hole? Then you could take anything that could lift it and get it fairly close, wouldn't have to lift it that high and you could walk off ground level and take a step or two and be on top. Just another hair brained crazy idea of mine (but it just might work).

when we took the engine out of our 203 to see just what had happened we parked under a tree - winched the engine up an inch or 2 - and pulled the combine out from under it..... ..

I just did that a couple of years ago with our gleaner A combine. It had the buda 230 six cylinder in it. Ours was using a lot of oil and was worn out. We bought one at the junkyard, got it all in and it started very well and ran great but still used a TON of oil. We ended up letting her sit and bought a gleaner K that has the chevy motor in it. Runs very well, has power steering, used no oil, has a much more comfortable cab and ran beans for us very well. I had a 3000 lb capacity air tired forklift to put our engine assembly in. It was very heavy though! Good luck.

I wonder if a rental outfit would have a portable A-frame hoist. I've seen them before. Lifting it up and having to move it around to get it in position, I'd be really worried about the loader creeping down or worse, a hydraulic failure. I used an engine hoist and my skid steer to move it, to pull and replace the engine and tranny in my Cat. The engine hoist gave me precise adjustments which made it a lot easier. Being that you have a lot more ackward placement to get it into, it would be good to use a real safe method to do it. I wonder if you could hire a service truck from a heavy equipment repair outfit with the crane on the side? Might cost a couple hundred bucks but would make your job a lot easier. Good luck. Dave

Closest rental place is probably 200 miles away. No concrete slab out there on the prairie to operate on anyways.

Heck, if I can't nudge that hooter up there into place, I just ain't worth my salt. :>)

Too bad you don't have a 8ft length of I beam to mount on that loader to get it a little farther away from the unit.
Good luck with that thing...be careful. Get you a ground guide and a rope to set it in.

These are all single stage.

The two smaller loaders are two-way and that big F-10 uses one way oil.

Gonna try to get it up there with this bird, but if not might have to go to plan B.

This one is the 2800 6 cylinder. I "think" about 80 horse or so.

The F2 only had it one year, 1977 in the short-tailed combine.

I always liked it 'cause it would just simply pull circles around the newer, turboed and "more powerful" 95 horse 4 cylinder version.

Either that, or the neighbors were raising far better crops than I. :>)

New - lots of places sell the smaller Kubota and Yanmar diesel engines.

Used/Salvage. Chevette or Chevy LUV or older Chevy S10 used a very nice little Isuzu diesel about that size. Older Nissan pickup trucks had a little diesel. Older Ford Ranger pickup trucks used a little Mazda diesel. The engines are popular in hay country to put on swathers.

You might look into a small irrigation pumper engine. Had one on a re-use pit one time; think it was a "Duetz", maybe?

That little thing would run on fumes. 'Bout a pint an hour?

Lance, the first F2, 1977, had a 6 cyl diesel, they were rated about 95hp at the engine. Starting the next year for the rest of the run, they had the turbo 4 you mention.

I've got the 6 cyl free air breather as well in mine. Good engine.
