I have an older (1975 ?) ford 550 3 cyl deisel loader backhoe with a 740 front bucket. None of the nbrs we can find on the unit match up to any ser. nbr. What I am looking for is some info on setting the timing. Firing order is 1-2-3 but it will not fire. Is the nbr one cyl. possibly the rear one and not the one in front?? Engine has vacume, compresson and fuel but will not fire.
Please HELP
Thanks
Bill

I have bled the fuel lines.Have set the timeing on #1 (front) cyl. top dead centre. Have plenty of vacume and compression. It will caugh and spit blow some black smoke at first then white, using either, but will not catch and run.
My hair used to be black now its white after a week on this engine.
Still wont start.

The 550 would have esentially the same engine as a 4000 ag tractor. Firing ordr is 1-2-3, front to back. I think 135 Fan is on the right track- there's probably air in the fuel line. Have you bled it at the filter, pump, and injectors? Unless something has broken, it's unlikely to be out of time, as the cam and injection pump are gear, not chain or belt driven.

If there is even the slightest air leak in the fuel line can cause a diesel not to start. Dave

Punting here, but as 3cyl diesel,it's prolly based on the post 1965 2000/3000 or 4000 all of which were available w/3cyl diesels.Serial No "should be" stamped into,NOT cast the right front corner of the transmission case."Should" be 7 character No. beginning with a C,followed by 6 digits(C123456).Many Fords of that era also had an info/specs sticker on underside of hood above battery.
