Looking for advice! We are debating the purchase of a 1974 149 cub cadet tractor in good working condition, new engine (rebuilt) snow blower and deck attachment. recent paint. The seller is asking $2000.00 Is it worth it???
Regards,

Thanks for the Advice everybody, I am not looking for a new tractor, I believe The older tractors are built stronger.
It's only to find the right one. The tractor we were looking at, were no papers to back up the engine work, the paint job was a quick rattle can type spray on,over the rust type job. The PTO would not disengage on the blower unit until turned off. Needed complete brakes, pads discs, tires on the rear. There is another around Toronto blue $white CC, I think we will look at they have sandblasted the frame, housings, blades wheel rims. judging by the pictures looks pretty nice. Thanks Again

$2000 might be a bit high - but worth it with the right details. I guess the questions would be how good is the paint, is it truly a "new" engine (warranty?) rebuilt (warranty?) or a repower with a modern Kohler of Honda (at least a 20hp to match the 14hp Kohler it was replacing) (warranty?). New tires and emblems? If yes to warranty and all the rest it's probably worth it - (price a new snow blower or a new garden tractor lately?).

If it was a rattle can paint job and the "new" engine has no papers back it up to then its worth $400-$500 in good running shape.

I paid $600 for a Cub 1450 with hydraulic lift (and rear lift arm), 50" mower deck, snow blade and a rear tiller. It was in "OK" shape but needed front tires, seat and a few minor repairs. It had been stored inside all its life but was not "new" looking by any streatch. Buddy of mine sold the exact same set up (actually tried to buy mine for the deal) only with a rebuilt engine and an "automotive quality" paint job on the tractor and all attachments for $2500 (one year written warranty on everything). I thought he was full of it till I looked it over before it was loaded up - looked nicer than it did on the IH show room floor in 1978.

I have a Cub 169 and one of those TSC mowers. The 169 has been a whole lot more reliable than that MTD made mower will ever be. Parts aren't as cheap...but don't have to be replace nearly as often either!

overpriced maybe--- but that old cub will be around much longer than the new models. Look at the frame strengh and way they are built. Don't worry about "only" 14 hp The older K series Kohlors pulled very well for their size. I did however lay out $1100 for a new in box engine two seasons ago. NO regrets and figure that I will wear out this motor too in this tractor. LOTS of hours and fun had on this one. Still looks good.

I think it is 500 over the value. Check out Craigs list, Ebay sales info, and get other opinions. they are good, but that is an old unit with old parts. JimN

I think you will find it to be way over priced .You can buy new Cub Cadet at TSC .18HP for about $2400.00

Tim, of course Icannot see it but they are a MUCH more solid mower tractor than can be bought for any kind of reasonable money. I do have one and like it a lot. easy enough to work on and parts are not a problem for a 1974 unit. only other wear issue is the linkage just before the hydro unit. the slot and damper springs wear but are repairable without much trouble. ihcubcadet.com is a great help with forums/parts and manuals.
