When traveling on the interstate, is it against the law to drive with your lites on bright? I sometimes do to see deer this time of year. However when I have a car in front of me I dim the lites. I have meet cars coming at me in the other side of the interstate and some seem to have their lites on bright, which does not bother me that much. Just wondering if it is against the law to drive with lites on bright on the interstate.

I drive a big truck to Tulsa OK each afternoon, and the return trip now starting at 6:00 PM or after it is dark. I drive the entire trip on low beam.

Yea, I agree, low beams are all that is necessary..! If a person comes up on my tail with those damned Fog Lites on, I can sure drive as SLOW as I think it must be foggy to the guy behind me...and I STOP for people who won't dim their lights...(Tire-iron & Gutting Knife, if they don't like it)... What the He** is wrong with people...!!!! I guess this is what we get, when we can't even discriminate on the Grounds of ABILLITY..!! Ron.

4513.15 headlight illumination requirements - protection of oncoming drivers - high beam indicator (A)whenever a motor vehicle is being operated on a roadway or shoulder adjacent thereto during times specified in section 4513.03 of the revised code, the driver shall use a distribution of light, or composite beam, directed high enough and of sufficient intensity to reveal persons, vehichles, and substantial objects at a safe distance in advance of the vehicle, subject to the following requirements: (1)Whenever the driver of a vehicle approaches an oncoming vehichle, such driver shall use a distribution of light, or composite beam, so aimed that the glaring rays are not projected into the eyes of oncoming driver. (2) Every new motor vehicle registered in this state, which has multiple-beam road lighting equipment shall be equiped with a beam indicator, which shall be lighted whenever the uppermost distribution of light from the headlisghts is in use, and shall not otherwise be lighted. Said indicator shall be so designed and located that, when lighted, it will be readily visible without glare to the driver of the vehicle. This is what the Ohio law said, can you tell I'm bored out of my mind right now? ( LOL )

Jimmy are you and me the only two that drive with our lights on dim? I do think that lights have gotten brighter the last few years though. Be safe out there. Tom

Darn after reading what others have written here I'm glad I live in courteous state like Oregon is. Its very seldom that one has to flash his lights to get another car to dim theirs. We drive with high beams a lot because of the deer population out here. They seem to like jumping right out in front of you. Going to the doctor the other day we came home late just about dusk and was using our lights on a back road when this nice little 4 pointer crossed over right in front of us. After seeing that little guy I told my wife why do people hunt these little jack rabbits with horns. Where I grew up we had real deer. A 4 pointer was a very large animal. One nice thing now is that most people drive with their light on all the time. Walt

In our state there is a law that says if you are within XXX ft (think it is 500 ft may be 1000) of another vehicle you must be using your low beam lights.

But lets look at it from another point of view.
Who Cares what the law says?? Why do we even need such a law??
Ever heard of common courtesy or treat others right.
To many people these days do not see past the end of their nose and could care less about the other guy. All they are worried about is themselves.

Others that twist me the wrong way are..... .
People that drive with bright fog lights on even on a clear night.
People that drive in the daytime with no lights on in the fog or rain.
People that replace there standard headlights with extra bright lights.

I guess I will leave it at that and climb down off my soap box.

Pay close attention here in Iowa and you'll notice a disproportionately large number of the cars that drive during the day in heavy fog or snow or rain without lights on are colored grey or white or some other lite color . Then those very same cars will drive right next to the trailer on the right side of a semi in that weather . Ever tried seeing a white car through a rainsoaked mirror on the right side in the tire spray ? DUH!! ...Randy

That is my point. Even with heated mirrors to dry them the road spray hides the car. But if you pull over on them because you could not see them with no lights on you are the idiot.

Dim your Lights Law Depends on what State you are driving in ,outside of Common Courtesy. Seems no such Law here in Az. People drive with their brights on even on Two Lanes and if they have the "Fog" Light option or after Market "Driving" Lights they have them on also and to "HE??" with oncoming Traffic is a common Attitude I believe. I use my Brights but dim if meeting oncoming Traffic,My Fogs only work on Low Beam and I use them frequently. I try to be Courteus and not offend other drivers but Ariz. is not a Friendly Driver State. I swear I think half the People on the Highway get in to some kind of Red Eyed Frenzy or they are Drinking or Snorting/Smoking Dope while Driving. Road Rage is very hard to avoid if you drive according to the Posted Limits here. I have been to Ohio and seen 5 Troopers in a 100 Mile stretch but in Az. you can drive from Border to Border and never see a Trooper and around Cities you may see a local Police Cruiser,Maybe. Here in Maricopa County Sheriff Joes Deputies are more in control of the Highways than DPS is. I.E. if you drive in Arizona be very aware of the Cars around you and "Do Not" Tailgate or drive in some ones Blind Spot. This causes a condition called"Road Rage".

A lot depends on both the state your in and how far apart the 2 roads areas are. If I rememebr right the drivers manual has that magic number in it but again its just a number and few people have a clue what 100 feet is or 200 feet etc.

What State are you quoting/remembering from? Around here all we have are one or two ,two lane paved roads and a lot of roads ,maybe lane and a half mostly paved w/blacktop. No one travels the roads usually after dark so bright lights are not a real big concern. when I have to go to Louisville I tend to drive on low beam as every one else does. Not too long ago a fellow could get run over after dark by a Shine Hauler but lately I think that has sort of slowed down.
