Which one would you consider, and why? Chevey(GM): is built more like a car inside. Kind of expensive, and not a practical work truck. Ford Super Duty: is more of a practical work truck. Milage not good. After the 6.0,new 6.4 engine has people skeptical. Dodge: Everyone says the cummins engine is bullet proof. Reputation of truck falling apart around the engine. Edmunds says they are all about the same. Ratings seem to favor Dodge. I tow a trailer most every day of the week.

Dodge, and nothing else in a diesel. The truck will certainly fall apart around the "B". It has to. The B is a light industrial engine which is probably good for a million miles if it's looked after well. There's not too many trucks that will last that long. I don't care if it's a Dodge, Ford or Chev... As far as I'm concerned there's little practical difference between any of the trucks with the exception that Dodge actually HAS an engine with the Cummins. The others don't. I'm a strong believe in the old saying "six in a row is the only way to go" when dealing with diesel engines.....

I'e had mostly Fords and Dodges. Drive Fords and Chevy's part time hauling horses. Next one I buy will be a chevy or GMC. Better mileage, more power, and apparantly less maint. My dodge (01, 2500, 24 valve cummins with 165,000 is in the shop for its second front end and the whole top out of the engine. Head is toast. Seems that all the idling around on the farm fouled out the injectors, and they were dribbling instead of spraying (2 and 6). Caused the head to overheat and warp, then started blowing oil into the water. Head kind of self destructed after that. Body wise, I've been losing parts since I got my first one in 1991. Never had one yet that didnt shed something before I got it off the lot. Rough ride too.

Ford, I've only driven the 7.3's. Good trucks, better ride that the Dodge, comparable power (actually better but they have 100 hp chips and my dodge is stock), terrible fuel economy. Made two runs week before last, on 800 miles and one 750 miles (round trips). Never got over 11 miles to the gallon. Lots of piston and head problems on the company trucks every 100-120,000.

Chevy/ GMC, smooth as silk ride. Cab feels comfortable, less racket in the cab than the other two. Better fuel economy and truck runs like a scalded dog. Durability I dont know. None of these have over 100,000 but they run unchipped with the chipped up Fords.

I worked for a company that had several dodge/ford/chevy diesels. You are right when you say the dodges fall apart, except the engine. These trucks were driven by the co owners, NOT abused. They made a mistake and bought 2006's, at 60000 miles we replaced the trans-6 speeds in most of them. The fords we had spent more time being towd in than any other brand. With the 100's of thousands of miles put on these trucks the GM's cost far less to operate and maintain.

well here's my opiinion. i got 2 diesels. a ford and a Chevy. the ford is a F-350 with a 5 spd. like the truck for hard pulling but not for long rides and milage. I got a Cheyvy 2500 HD with the 6 spd allison automatic with the option of pushbutton manual shifting. love that truck for everything. very comfterble seats and gets good milage (23-27 MPG) does everything i want it to and is a good daily driver.

Personally I don't and won't own a diesel pickup. To add information though, I saw in my last "Two Cylinder" magazine that you GM lovers can get them with a John Deere diesel engine now.
I'll stick to my gasoline burning Fords thank you.

Pick up the latest issue of popular mechanics. It tests each truck against each other for ride, acceleration(empty and loaded) braking turning radius, mpg. GMC finished first in every category except 0 -30 acceleration ( with dodge winning) Buy a copy or check it out at their site. I will try to post a shortcut. The winner was gmc, second ford, and third dodge

WE HAVE 2 O4 MODEL DODGE 3500 EXACTLY ALIKE EXCEPT 1 IS 6 SPEED AND THE OTHER IS AUTOMATIC. THE 6 SPEED WILL WORK CIRCLES AROUND TOE AUTO. AND WITH MUCH BETTER FUEL ECONOMY. THE 6 SPEED WILL PULL A LOADED TRAILER IN 6TH GEAR, BUT THE AUTO. HAS TO BE RUN OUT OF OVERDRIVE,WHICH RESULTS IN HIGHER RPM AT THE SAME HIGHWAY SPEED. IS I AM JUST RIDING I LIKE THE AUTO. BUT FOR WORK I PREFER THE 6 SPEED. IF YOU AER GONNA JUST RIDE THE G.M. IS GOOD. BUTTTTT IF YOU NEED IT TO WORK HARD, BETTER GET A DODGE.

I don't have a dog in this fight so whatever this might be worth?? I see virtually no one who does any serious trailer towing for a living using GMs with Duramax. All Fords or Dodges w/diesels, duals and 5th wheel gooseneck trailers. I drive 5000 miles per month on interstates between Wis and NY. I personally think the Dodges got a bad rap from abuse by owners. When you get a truck loaded with sand and a snowplow jammed against a curb with all the torque that Cummins puts out, something will break. Just my opinion and what I see.

Second owner, 1997 Chevy K2500, 6.5 turbo, 228,000 miles, Had new head gaskets at 200,000 miles, original 4 speed auto tranny never been opened, Original owner used it from 97 to 05 hauling used cars back and forth between NY and TX(has gooseneck hitch). Still rides like a Car and gets 20 mpg

Depends if you order the plain vanilla interior/chassis. Or you are getting into the SLE, SLT etc.

Real life experience - Brother has 98 Cummins 12 valve 2500, engine has been bulletproof after the dowel pin update. 5-speed transmission has been rebuilt three times now at 170k, first two were 5th gear nut falling off, last one was a bearing going out and running through ALL the gears ($1750). Pickup is holding up just fine and still makes 18 to 22 mpg regularly unloaded. Ran it a couple days hauling hay about 5 miles round trip and letting it run all day and managed 15mpg out of it.

His 06 Cummins runs like a scalded dog - way more power than you need and the 6-speed has close splits to get you moving with a load. Mileage is lower (16 mpg) than the older one.

They all run good and they all break down too!! LOL.. You always here nightmare stories of all 3 and you can be sure to hear about the good stories as well.
I have a 2006 dually 6.0 Power Stroke. Runs good. I don't have any complaining to do about it. I can get high teens as far as milage goes driving back and forth to work. On a good trip I can get 20 or so.. Don't get me wrong you can't hot rod it around too much or it won't get any where near that.. I had a 2000 Power Stroke before this one and again it was a good truck too never really had to do anything with it.
As far as the Chevys go I think they ride better then any other truck, but to get that ride it seems like there chassis are a little on the weak side compaired to Dodge and Ford. I used to work in the landscaping business and we had all 3 brands of trucks. Im not saying this because I have a Fod at this time, but the Fords did seem to hold up a little better and the guys kind of leaned tords them. Believe me these trucks were worked into the ground..

I use a Chevy 3500 Duramax/Allison to tow trailers at work and your assesment of "not a practical work truck is way off the mark. My only objection with the Chevy is that it is too high off the ground requiring changes/replacement of hitches to get the ball down where it should be and it's high to lift stuff into.

Sounds like you have your mind made up already.
Buy what you like.
I have a 1992 Dodge diesel and it is not falling apart around the engine. I am about to buy a new one. The body etc held up better than any of the GM or Fords I have had.

I`d appreciate if you would elaborate;

"Dodge: Everyone says the cummins engine is bullet proof. Reputation of truck falling apart around the engine."

Neither I nor any of my many friends who drive a Dodge with Cummins share that opinion. You`ll have to accept it as a given that every one of us is hauling or towing something heavy on a regular basis or we wouldn`t have spent the money on the Cummins. My only complaint is that I wish I got better fuel economy but my truck weighs 8200# empty so I guess I shouldn`t complain too loud.

You have already rated the vehicles in your mind, and ranked them. Why not just buy the one that makes you happy.

Nothing worse than say a Ford guy buys the odd Chevy or Chevy guy buys the odd Dodge, then their buddies have to listen to them $&@*% for a year or two 'til they can dump the "lemon" that "never was any good"!

I have a 04 Chevy Duramax. I get a honest 20 mpg.on short trips around town and a easy 25 on the Hy. Towes great with plenty of power. We pull a tandom trailer with 2 tractors [Around 12,000] and still get close to 19 on the hy. Best truck I've ever had. I did have the computer reprogramed to get the better milage and torque[ 60 more]. No chips, no gages, just reprogramed. It has 60,000 miles and only went back to the dealer for service or miner recall notices.

Since you use one that much you may want to look at some of the low profile medium duty trucks by Navistar,Peterbuilt, freightliner ect. Other than those a Dodge with the Cummins is the only regular pickup to consider. My 1996 Ram 2500 with 360 gas engine has 174,000 miles and hasn't fallen apart yet,no squeaks or rattles either. No drips on the floor !

Got a 1998 Dodge 1 ton Dually with Cummins. Quad cab and all wheel drive. Just turned 200,000 miles on Monday. No problems with the engine. Replaced the lift pump 3 years ago and the torque converter and radiator last year. Put in a Gerand Brothers triple disc and works great.
The truck pulls like a tractor and most of the miles I have put on it was with a trailer on its tail. Pull a 16 foot livestock trailer, 16 foot bumper pull flatbed and a 25 foot gooseneck flatbed.
Not my favorite driving truck, but the best workhorse for towing... Gene
