6.2 diesel glow plugs

How long are the glow plugs supposed to stay on? The timer or controller went so i put a push button in. the truck is only running to the dump and pushing snow, she's pretty rough but runs and drives good dont want to stick alot of money in it.

If you feel the need to go the manual route, install AC DELCO 60G's or Bosch dual-coil glow plugs. They heat up a bit slower than the 10-Volt Gp's originally used, but WILL NOT overheat and burst and break off, and get jammed into the top of a piston like the original GP's do, if cycled "ON" for a few seconds too much. As a matter of fact, in one test, AC Delco 60's withstood being "ON" for 8 HOURS straight, without a failure.

Quite a few of us 6.2 diesl "diehards" have gone the 60G or other dual-coil GP route, then installed an 1984 and up electronic GP conroller over on the fender skirt, away from engine heat. Then, it will even give the GP's a quick cycle when the engine is lukewarm, GREATLY aiding starting and reducing smoke at startup.

That is how the GP's behave on the electronically controlled 1994 and up 6.5 TD's, and it's a real benefit to starting.

There is a way to add a resistor to the GP controller's feedback circuit to increase "ON time", if needed.

The glow-plug controller goes bad rarely. If it does, it can usually be repaired. If you search around, you can often find them new in the $85 price range.

Most of the time, when it stops working - it's because one of two temperature sensors need to be replaced, and they cost around $8 each. The main one to check - or bypass - is the "glow plug inhibitor sensor." When it goes bad, you can just eliminate it and bypass it.

Going on memory from the shop manual, the max on time with the controller is 8 seconds. The controller is about $180, if I remember right. Long ago, I put a switch on the dash that controls the relay. I can count to 6 or 7 seconds pretty well!

All the replacement glow-plugs for 6.2 civilian trucks (not military) are PTC type - i.e. postive temeprature coefficient. They are self-limiting and almost burn out proof. These are Delco AC60Gs and have been for about 3 years now. If you have older plugs - 9 seconds at a time is the limit.

New PTC plugs, besides Delco AC 60GS, are Wellman WAP plugs. Either of these take a little to heat up than the old AC7s or AC9s. Here's a chart:

Wellman GO50 plug for 6.2 and 6.5 diesels
2 seconds - 10.2 volts, 13.6 amps and 1500 degrees F
5 seconds - 10.3 volts, 11.7 amps, and 1560 degrees F
9 seconds - 10.3 volts, 9.66 amps, and 1905 degrees F
12 seconds - 10.4 volts, 8.6 amps, and 2000 degrees F

AC60G (Beru) plug for 6.2 and 6.5 diesels
2 seconds - 10 volts, 8.6 amps and 807 degrees F
5 seconds - 10 volts, 8 amps and 1145 degrees F
9 seconds - 10 volts, 7.3 amps and 1545 degrees F
12 seconds - 10 volts, 7 amps, and 1716 degrees F

Had a "82 chevy 6.2. Gutless motor but it served me well. I to used a starter button for the plugs after the timer went and it worked for the 2 years I kept it on the road(body went to pot). I would push it, count to 5, wait(count to 5), push it, count to 5, you get the idea. seemed ok.

I forgot; I found the hot wire to the timer, don't remember which one, and spliced the starter button into that. Maybe thats why the 6 volt stuff was never a problem.

1982 - 1984 the controller is in the cylinder head. 1985 - 1992 is on top mounted behind the air-intake.

The 6.2 uses a 6-volt plug that absolutely has to cycle off and on via the controller.

Put on a constant push switch hooked to that 12 volts and you'll probably burn 'em out on the first use.

The replacement glow plugs - 60Gs - are 10.5 volts and are self-limiting. It's just about impossible to burn one out by running it too long.
