Heres the easy way to find where it is. Take your left hand and put it on the starter. Then look just under the battery and you should see a flat spot right in front of your eyes. The number is stamped right there and will sort of look like this, say you have a 4 speed tranny. 640
XCVBN
If you have a 5 speed it will be
650 or 660
XCVBN

Bubba , you will find the numbers stamped on that flat area of the bellhousing just under the oil cup of your aircleaner . Hopefully nobody used a grinder when stripping paint . The best way to is to use a little paint stripper . Please don't use harsh sqandpaper or ya might remove the stamping . Once I found mine (it was hard also) I took a very small chisel & carefully stamped all numbers deeper so new paint didn't cover it up . If ya still have troubles look at John Smith website . My email is callj.j.s@verizon.net . God bless, Ken
