Well from what i have learned over the years on the old gas start diesels is to let idle on the diesel side to cool as diesel engine will cool far better then on the gas side . As the gas side is to WARM the engine up . I have run the old I H diesels since back in the 60's in construction equipment and then on my owen 450 diesel , the old timers always told me to let idle till the temp gauge get's down into the cold area then shurt her off . Also never ever stall one when hot and not restart as fast as one can . Always make sure that the starting gas tank is always full when going to the field . You can crack a head real fast if you stall one when she is working and hot as what i mean here in the working range of the engine . When she stalls temp. goes up in the comb. chamber and this can crack the head. When i worked mine it would set and idle at 800-900 rpm for up to twenty min. to cool down . Did it work well that old 450 is still running to this day And the man that owens it now has run it the way i told him and other then a rebuild on the injection pump that is about it . I sold that tractor back in 73 and have tryed many times to buy it back even offered the man a 706 diesel even up , the answer i got ain't now way.

I have owned a MTA diesel for years correct way cool them down then change over to gas and turn off then change back over to diesel. Reason is if left on gas while cooling off after shut down it could warp the starting valves. They are a great motor and run cheap but just remember to cool it off ever time before turn off other wise your going to crack the head. Wayne

You are best off to shut down on diesel instead of gas.

ive been told to shut down on gas and to shut down on diesel, ive done both, but the past few times ive shut down on gas. well when i switch from diesel to gas it dies, then i restart the engine on gas and let it cool down then shut it off. the question is what is the proper way to shut this mahine down?

thanks, jonathan from nepa

Push lever forward so starting valves close on seats.
