hydralic filter on woodsplitter

i made a woodsplitter about 24 yrs ago i never put a hydralic filter on it its splitt many loads of firewood plus a 2500/3000 fence post over the years now the pump i assume is getting weak it doesnt have the splitting power it used to have should i add a filter this time after i put on a new hydralic pump or not.thanks

A hydraulic filter, properly installed, is never a bad idea. The clearances in the pump and the valve are pretty small and tclean oil will make a big difference in the life. That said, 24 years of service, depending on the total hrs of use, sounds like pretty good life for a pump.

I made this splitter back in 1982 and I used a filter. I copied everything that was on a splitter that I rented. I put a 10hp Tecumseh from a Sears tractor on it. I should've used a 6-inch I beam since I didn't have anyway to temper the 4-inch beam and it became slightly bowed. It sure to took the work out of splitting wood. Hal

I definitely suggest the filter. Obviously the suction line to the pump would seem to be a good place for the filter, but it is not. Restricting the intake on hydraulic pumps can result in cavitation. That can quickly damage a pump. The return line from the valve to the reservoir is the recommended location for a filter.
