We have had bucks only for about 25 years (some doe permits certain areas) it was supposed to rebuild the herd. All i can see it has done is nothing and created small deer 125-175lbs and spike horns. Some of us believe it reduces breading stock badly and cause dwafisum etc your thoughts please.

havvey, i would agree with you on that. if all you are doing is taking the largest and most healthy of a species, then the breeding stock will be coming from the smaller animals. kinda like building a herd of cattle with a crappy bull. many areas are overpopulated with deer, that population gets weak, produces smaller animals. i think they need to do a little better management. issue doe permits to cut back the herd size, also issue permits for the smaller bucks.

Here in Indiana they instituted a 1 buck rule. 1 buck for the whole season, doesn't matter bow, shotgun or muzzleloader, 1 buck...

I like it I have seen more and bigger bucks from this... There are plenty of does for freezer fillers, but now more people get bucks and bigger bucks vs a select few getting multiples....

The deer numbers are probably up. But hunting pressure does not allow the bucks to mature.

If you want big racks then you must have restrictions on shooting 1-4 year old deer. Would you accept a moratorium on hunting for up to 3 years to allow the heard to mature?

I think they tried that in PA... Wasn't popular.

Your later post you complained about the low deer numbers so you want to plant somethign to lure them in, now in this previous post you are stating that because there are a lack of doe permits that the deer are stunted, I assume from too many deer, so what is it, are you just compaining because you don't want to work hard enough to get one? I used to work in deer managment years ago when I got out of college and it is just amazing how hunters make up so many excuses about why they did not get enough deer, big enough deer, big enough racks, they all seem to think they know so much more then the biologist do.

Good one! It's called "deer hunting",not "sit in your heated shack and wait for one to walk in". I asked a guy one time what he expected next, for the deer to walk in,unzip it's skin and jump in the freezer?

Missouri says you need one buck to 5-10 does so thats why they have opened up doe season and closed down buck season. Some countys have an atler limit in them for the buck to try to get bigger bucks

A fellow who raises red deer on the coast has 40 does and 1 buck he calls LUCKY.He said two bucks in a fenced area is bad.LUCKY seem to know more about breeding than the experts.

yes that to, ratio is all out of order and when you reduce the bucks some does are not getting bred.

I recent read of a guy in the Michgan thumb area who had taken on a program of herd improvement on private property. It involved earning a buck - you have to shoot a doe first. His contention was that the ratio of bucks to does out to be 1:3, and it is averaging 1:12 or more in Michigan. I think overall numbers are too high, but I seldom see a buck. I have 5 or 6 that come into my yard every night, but I have seen only a couple of bucks in 20+ years here.

On the mountain here does take the easy paths, bucks prefer mountain laurel or brush, close to their does.

I'm cutting a new driveway currently. Does greet me almost every night on my way home, don't bolt from the driveway (easiest path) until I'm 75' away on my Cat. Never see a buck. Mornings, the driveway tracks look like a deer interstate.

My hunters know to watch the does, hoping that a buck will show himself. They've taken some impressive racks this year.

I don't get it. This is while they always say does are better eating.

No idea what the ratio is, but Virginia seems to have more and more doe days. And no shortage of deer.

Second farm over has a high dollar hunt club, $1300 for your one buck, minimum antler size specified. They claim they're improving the herd but I don't see how. Or maybe that's where the large bucks here come from.
