Marv, Cleaning a carburetor is a small part. It
must be soaked for hours in a good carb cleaner
vat to remove the lime buildup inside. Then you
can put it to work. Chuck

Sounds like an intake leak, in my Case (pardon the pun) a sloppy throttle shaft seal. Fixed her right up. I put in an o-ring instead of the packing.

Clean your gas tank out good. Clean sediment bowl good. Inspect sediment bowl screen and replace if necessary. Blow out gas line. Could be dirt/rust/water in your tank/line causing this problem. Some even install a inline metal filter if you can't get system clean. Don't use a tiny cheapee inline filter or that will cause you problems also. Once you do all this clean carb again. Carb may need to be rebuilt. Also inspect intake manifold for leaks - it may be sucking air in there.
