How many busses came with a 5.9 cummins?

I've always wanted to do a cummins conversion in an Oliver, but the Cummins is the biggest obstacle($$$$$$$$). Then after hearing about another guy who put one in out of a bus, it hit me:

About 1 mile away is WIR -Wisconsin International Raceway. They have bus races (figure 8's) every year in September for their big Eve of Destruction.

My brother is good friends with the guy who owns the track, as he married his wife's neice and has done a few business deals with them. Every year after the race, the busses just sit there. Not sure what ever happens to them but most of the guys that race have a different bus every year...

I'm thinking if I could get my hands on a Cummins 5.9 that may be in one of those busses, I could afford to swap out the needed parts to make it into a tractor engine instead of a truck engine.

Just a thought for now, I may have to mention it to my brother tomorrow when we're driving out to look at a little 550 for him...

Most common place to find a 5.9 Cummins is in a Bluebird TC2000. This is a transit style (flatnose) bus built from the later 1980's till a couple years ago. They were a popular bus and all had 5.9 Cummins. All of them would have an 545 Allison Auto trans. in them. An International chassis bus will always have an International engine. The DT360 mentioned by Jdemaris was used till 1994.As for Freightliners mentioned below almost all of the older ones (late 1990's) used as a bus chassis around here have a 3126 Cat . There are a few Cummins too.Freightliner FS65 chassis did not get used for buses till the last half of the 1990's.Alot of Ford B700 chassis from the mid 1990's on also used Cummins 5.9. Some of them say Ford on them but they are still a 5.9.

Local school in my town just sold a 1995 Bluebird 64 passenger bus on sealed bid. I went down and looked it over - it had a 5.9 Cummins with the good in-line injection pump and an Allison trans. Only 100K miles on it. The bus had a damaged roof from a tree falling on it. I bid $1000 and did not get it. I later heard it sold for over $3000 - so the engine did not go cheap.

I later looked at a few other school busses and noticed many had 5.9 International engines instead of the 5.9 Cummins - so you can't assume a bus advertised with a 5.9 diesel is a Cummins.
The 5.9 IH engine is also turbocharged and intercooled - but I don't know much about the engine series otherwise - except they sell a lot cheaper.

I would be a little leary of one of those bus engines ,you don't know how bad they could have been abused during the race .and thats a lot of work for nothing if the engine turns out to be a dud .

You have a good idea. My buddy did the same thing. I thought he got his out of an international school bus. He gave $1800 for the bus. He then sold the rear and some frame parts to a guy that wanted to make a heavy duty farm trailer. He parted out a few other things and hauled the rest to the scrap yard. All said I think he has less than a grand in the motor. The bus had 120k or 160k miles on it.

IF you get an older engine there should not be much to switch just the electric fuel shutoff solenoid to a pull cable our wire the tractor for it the ones in the Case IH tractor have a lot of parts in common with the dodge pickups when I worked for case we sold a lot of pickup parts because they were cheaper than the cummins dealer.

The early (2000 and prior) Freightliner school buses had em for sure. The later models may have em too, but I left the truck shop in 2000.
