So there's been a kitten hanging around the hunting cabin. It lives on chipmunks and whatever else it can find. There are a lot of coyotes down there and it's getting pretty cold. The cat would not last the winter. Contemplated bringing it home, buddy says to bring it home, so I did. Now his mom is pissed off and wants me to drop the cat back off at the cabin because she thinks it belongs to someone. This is in the middle of nowhere, the nearest house is 1 mile down the road. Cat was starving, what would you do? My conscience cannot let me send this cat to certain death.

I have had cats for seventy years.I have adopted many.I once found 7 kittens that were dumped beside the road. When I first drove by I thought it was a dead black cat .After checking a friends house while he was away I drove by again and saw a kitten run into the grass.I stopped and saw that it was a pile on kittens huddled together. They hadnt moved in half an hour.I put 6 kittens in the car but could not find #7.Got soaked in the rain and gave up .When I got home my wife insisted on going back for #7.We did find it.We took them to our vet for a health check.Vet checked them over no charge. We found homes for all, even the fearful one that ran off.In general a cat that approaches you with out fear is home less.I have had some nice cats over the years. One kitten I found at the town dump used to got hunting woodchucks with me.Any one who mistreats a cat is a low down skunk. My friend took in a tom cat who appeared at his camp.the cat was very shy.Vet said the cat had signs of abuse. The cat lived with my friend for 10 years.Friend spent money taking care of him as he got older but said the expense didnt matter.

Let your conscience be your guide. I too find that the more people I meet the more I like animals. If you can afford it and want then spay/neuter it when ready and enjoy a companion for many years. I hate cats but they love me. Got up this morning to the sight of another dead field mouse gracing the front porch. Another feline trophy.

jeep, i think you did the right thing. if it was abandoned, which more than likely is the case, its not the animals fault its owners were loosers. i would not let it run and turn into a feral animal. ferals do way too much damage to local species and to domestic farm animals. we have a couple packs of feral dogs in our township, they are meaner than h#ll and kill for pleasure. they are smart enough to avoid getting shot too. like the other guys said, find the owners, keep it, find a home for it, or put the animal down.

I have about 3or 4 cats that live aroung the woods here at my place. They are dropped off cats that are to skidish to stay around the farm. A couple have survived 3 MN winters now. I have not had a good chance to shoot them so I haven't. Point 1 is the cat would be fine, point 2 is why add to the thousands of wild cats there already are to decimate the wildlife. Give it away, bring it to the humane society, keep it, or bury it.

This BS about cats killing wild life is spread by fellows who like to kill for pleasure.A farmer had a cat who left his kills on the back porch. The farmer kept track by recording the type of kills on a porch post.95% of the kills were rodents.Birds are tough to catch.

I love Cats because I HATE MICE!! Not so much the mice themselves just the way they perfume everything with their waste and love to nibble on anything valuable and/or electrical.

Three cats in the house; I can put up with them as long as they stay on their mouse patrol shifts!

Hi cj,

Your friends mom has given good advice! I've seen some of my wife's cats 3/4mile away from home.

A neighbors dog a mile away comes to play with our dog a couple times a week, then goes home. He's been doing this for 2yrs. He was born next door to us.

Another dog used to vist over 5 miles a day to get the extra cat food then go back home. He would wait until the cats were done eating then help himself. We were shocked when we found out where he lives.

A ferrel domestic cat is hard to catch as they don't trust very well, even very small kittens. I grabbed a 3wk kitten from a school boilers room that we were building and the boiler test would have flooded the kitten's home and killed her. At 3wks old she bit thru to the bone in my finger when I tried to catch her. Took my wife and kids several weeks to make friends with her so the cat wouldn't bite.

If you walked up to a cat or the cat came to you, then I bet it was someones pet.

Your friends mother? Do you live with her or something or why is it any concern to her?

Sorry, I should have specified, the hunting camp and 100 acres belongs to Buddy's mom and dad. We are going to find a good home for it. We have 4 indoor cats, 1 indoor/outdoor or we'd keep her for ourselves. If it were a big mean Tom that could fend for itself, it'd be different. She wants me to sentence this cat to death. Truth be told, I like most cats better than most people.

I think you made a good decision to find the cat a good home. I don't know why people hate cats. When they take a dump they cover it, they don't stink. Maybe it's because they can't control a cat like a dog. Stan

Hey just to make her happy check at the places close to where you picked it up and see if its theres. If they all say no then tell her and that way you will kill to birds with one stone

I second what old said. Some cats are born and raised in the wild and do fine there. If this cat likes people it,
a) wonered off from some ones home and some one has been looking for it.
b) was dumped in the sticks by some one who did not want it.

Ask around, if some one is looking for it or you keep it you get a warm fuzzy feeling.

Dave

Thanks for careing. That cat needs a good home. I currently have 7 horses, 4 mules, and 1 donkey that all needed homes. Every darn one of them has a neat, individual personality. They take about 50 round bales of my hay each year, but they needed homes too. Two of them are even registerd horses. Owner died and no one was taking care of them. Then a son to the owner called and said if I would take them I could have them. They were his dad's pride and joy, but no one else cared about them. It was going into winter and they had no grass left to eat. Pretty thin. They did have a waterer, so they had fresh water. Boy you should have seen them eat hay the first day at my house!

Walt, That's true when a cat adopts you. Your its human for life, I have a black cat, that came here as a kitten, Now this is no lie, he love's to ride on the tractor. If he doesn't get his ride he pouts like a little kid, After his ride on the tractor, if I still have work to do I take him into the house so he doesn't get hurt.(he would be there as long as i am with the tractor.) while in the house he will torment my wife, as long as i am out with the tractor. also my wife can call outside for him, he won't come for her. I go out to call for him. most of the time he'll make a bee line for the house. He's a onery cat. I think I named him right. Mischeif. sorry about the long post. Dave F.

Love it and keep it and tell your buddies Mom to get a life.
When we moved into this house in 92 about 6 months later I heard a meow at the door and there was this poor little cat hungry and looked awful it looked like one that the last owner had. We took it in and it lived with us for many years before passing on from old age and happy as any cat could be. Cat adopt you for life if this one that you found adopts you then its your for life no matter what. Walt

If you want to have a pet and are committed to care for this cat do not worry. I shut a cat in our shed 10 years ago for a week, no food or water... She came out and I said the follow imfamous words to my wife.... "She's hungey, She's pretty, Fed it".... Shasta still curls up on my lap every night.
