I have a Massey-Harris tractor that I was going to restore. I really don"t have the time or money for this project. I would like to put it up for sale. The first problem is that I can"t find the serial number on the tractor. I think it is about a 25-30 HP motor. The only tag on the tractor is on the motor. The tractor seems to be very unusual in that it has a 2 position mechanical lift over the PTO. It looks like it could have been a pre hydrolic 3 point concept. If anyone can help me figure out how to determin the model I would appriciate your help. One more thing the motor has a F 400A on it, if that helps.

Here is the MH-20...

You can go to the picture galleries and search the different models. See which sheet metal style is close and that will help narrow the gap.

Does it look like either of these? A pony and a MH44

If it has F400 cast into the block then it is a 4-cylinder flathead Continental engine. Could be a 124, 140, or a 162 cubic inch version, they are all the same engine with different cylinder bores, everything else is interchangeable except the pistons and rings. If it has hinged sidecovers and a cast iron front tub surrounding the engine, it is a MH 101 or 102 Junior. If it has a cast iron tub and no hinged sidepanels it is likely a MH 30. If it has hinged sidepanels and a channel iron front frame, it is a MH 81 or 82 or 20 or 22. If it has a channel iron front frame and no hinged sidepanels, it could be a MH Mustang and maybe one other model (same tractor basically), I can't remember the model name. Serial number is in the upper surface of the machined differential case between the shifting platform and the cover for the rear differential gears. Look to the left side on that upper surface, it'll be covered in paint and pigeon poop so get a wire brush.

Most Massey Harris tractors have the serial number and possibly the model number(I can't remember) stamped on the top of the transmission case near the clutch pedal & the PTO lever.

Going with what Bob said. The tractors that used the F-124 were Models 81, 20, 21 & the 101jr used it from 1939 thru 1941.
