I'm shopping for a tractor to use for harrowing, mowing and mabe some loading. It would probably need to be a midsize or a large utility tractor. I'm mostly thinking of a John Deere or Kubota or perhaps a Massey Ferguson. Does anyone have any comments as to the pros and cons or which one I may be happier with?
Thanks,
RussT

Depends on what you're doing with it.... If it's just light loading and lighter utility work then the lighter series of tractor will probably do fine. Kubota would probably be my pick from that bunch.
If you're getting into heavy daft work, hard pulling and heavy loading then I'd lean more towards the Massey or a 6000 series Deere. There is a point where a full frame and large planetary axles are needed. As far as I'm concerned you can't take what was once considered a 50 hp tractor, power it with a 100 hp engine and call it a 100 hp TRACTOR. There's a lot of that going on today, and I think most will eventually see that if they apply all that power to the drawbar, they won't have 10-12000 hour tractors. They'll have 5000 hour tractors. That, interestingly enough is where a lot of Kubota's get cut loose by their original owners. Wonder why.....

I guess I am not a real farmer then? My farm must be fake, by cows must be fake, my balers and haybines must be fake too?

The old days of "Japanese junk" (not my saying) are over. The Japanese are very much into quality products. If they were not, the Japanese auto industry would not be dominating our market. It was the US tractor industry that gave up making small tractors, so the Japanese filled the void. I think all three of the brands mentioned are good machines. I would base a purchase decision on dealer evaluations rather than the brand.

So you mean to tell me that you don't now or ever have owned even the smallest of trinkets that have been made in a country other than an Allied forces one???Japeneese products have become more pouplar than North American ones because the domestic ones have become so poorly built to compete with the low standard of living wages in other countries that they either can't be afforded or if they are affordable, they can't be depended upon.I would 10 to 1 rather buy Made in Canada or Made in the USA,but the bottom line is my banker won't support me if I do.Besides, the cheaper versions of JD's aren't made in USA anyways,or so I'm told on here.I'm too young to remember Pearl Harbour, but I can certainly feel the basis of anger towards them,I do remember 911.I wouldn't mind supporting more local,if they didn't mind supporting my product. Most every grociery getter looks at the tag and doesn't care where it's made,so long as it tastes the same, and they save a few cents.Either the rest of us citizens have to stick together,or we have to bang for the buck hunt too.pd.

Had nothing but Kubota M8200's for loader work for the last 8 years now.Wouldn't have anything else, you take them home,if you take good care of them, they will take good care of you.Never sent one out on a float yet, except to trade for another new one.pd

Kubota all the way. M series. You can always add weight to them. It depends on how big you want. All the M series have a 230 cu in or smaller and turn 2600 except the M125X which has 356 cu in. and turns 2400. I prefer the slower turning engines.Nicer to work with. Not really sure why. Also get a hydraulic clutch, not a dry one. Not as good for back and forth work. As for John Deere it's way to expensive and overrated. Not sure about the Massey. Never really looked at them.

I highly recomend the Kubota M series. I just sold my old M4700 to my neighbor, it was ten years old and it never had anything done other than fluid and filter changes. It even still had the original battery's. I now run an M7040, and I have died and gone to heaven..... ..... ..... .....

Luke, I bought a M4700 last year after reading some of your posts. Mine came with an almost new Woods Loader. You were right-its a great tractor. Now, your 7040 makes me want a cab tractor!

M Series Kubotas are a good utility tractor.
They are a little on the light side but are priced right and have good dealer support.

Kubota actually makes a utility special built on the M platform.
