This morning while eating breakfast at the local cafe with my son [wife has to go to work early leaving us to fend for ourselves]a friend of mine sets down with us and starts talking , Asks me what his dads old tractor is worth and he is wanting to sell it. He goes on to tell me that a gear in the transmission has a broken tooth on one of thr gears but he has the gear to fix it . Says he tore into the transmission about 10 years ago but that he will never fix it and wants to sell it. The tractor is in a shop at his house get this 3 miles from my house.I remember then having this tractor but thought they had gotten rid of it years ago . So after breakfast we went to look and see what he had.Said he thought my son and I might be interested in it since we have restored s few trsctors. When we got to his house he said the tractor was in the shop and to open the big door to get a better look that he had to make a nature call run. I opened up the big shop door and could not believe what we were looking at . My son almost ran over me to get to the serial # plate Inside sat a 330s John Deere serial #330457 still in working clothes, still with the cultivators attached. In a few minutes the owner came back out and I said is this the tractor .Yep it is and its for sale what will u give for it.I was so excited that i almost peed in my pants and my son was grinning from ear to ear for he knew that that tractor was going home with us .Told the owner that I did not price other peoples tractors but he must have a figure in mind .Ha said that he no longer wanted or needed the tractor and thought maybe I could restore it he would take 750.00 for it like it sat . Told him give me 15 minutes and let me go to the bank and would be back with the money that that tractor was sold. I almost fainted when he told me the priceand asked him 4 times was he sure he wanted to sell it for that. Said yes that he thought that I would maybe restore it and he would know where it was .Yes the tractor is home with me now,it just got moved to top of the list to be restored and no it is not for sale.My son and myself are still in shock about this and still cannot believe that we bought a 330s for 750.00.And yes this a true story

Well, I say if he's happy withg the price he got and where it went, that's all that matters. If everyone expected everything to bring top dollar at any given time, you'd be like my brother who thinks my old rusted out 66 bel-air with a blown up motor is worth $2500-3000 for just the car, without the anchor or the rebuilt 2 sp.

To me, it's worth whatever top bidder is willing to pay. I'm planning on putting it on ebay sometime soon just to get rid of it. If I get $500, so be it.

Well Paul, It's a John Deere 330 Southern special and there were 935 made in '58 '59 &'60. And there is alot of people that want what no body else has or at least not many have one. As far as the tractor for use it was good to go to the mail box if it was very far from the house. Hard to get on and off of, a little more power than a small lawnmower (21.5 )and weights 2750 lbs. Now don't get me wrong I like John Deeres but I do like one that will work. A pretty good old Farmall C will do more'n two 330s

but that's why they have different flavors of these ol' tractors.

There are no production records for the 330V or
southern special. They were not factory built, they were all converted from 330S tractors.

Ah - something southern. That's why a Minnesota lad never heard of one. :)

Rare & collector vs actually useful - I understand.

Dandy Don,

I'm with you on this one. I had a 1959 430S with the front and rear weights, second owner...1790 hrs and was a happy camper the day that POS went down the road! I believe that is the most uncomfortable machine I ever operated....no damned wonder they didn't make very many of the 330/430's. The 1010 isn't anything but a 430 with a 4 cylinder engine and it's a POS too! Uncomfortable, ungainly, noisy, and UGLY.

Boys, the asbestos suit is on...flame away. I have owned more JD's than any other color and my 2005 tractor is a JD. But I have never ever understood all the hype over a 330/430. You ever wonder why so few were made? NOBODY was buying them! Get on one and drive it for 15 minutes...they steer like an ox cart. That incessant POP-POP-POP-POP would drive a wooden Indian nuts! Deere had some useful machines back then...but the 330-430's weren't amongst their better ones. I've got a neighbor that collects old Deere's and they all look nice and he made the same exclamation over his 330.."do you know how many of those they made!?" Brother's, had they been a popular machine in their time, Mother Deere would have gladly cranked them out by the tens of thousands. But they weren't. The guys with red paint had a better set up and they did crank them out by the tens of thousands and yes, that is why they sell for $1200-$1800. But for using...they're worth 5x what a similar Deere is.

I'm glad the 330 was saved from the scrap man. Paint it up and park it!

8N's are certainly not useless. They're very handy for going down to the mailbox to get the mail. As long as you don't get very much mail.

So - what's a 330s???? Hadn't heard of such a model, not into that color so much.

Why's it worth anything extra?

Yes we are all jealous !!!!

Truth is any other tractor of that size but another color or even green with a different model number would only be worth $750 Even JD's with as few or fewer built than the "magic" 330 will not bring anywhere near what a 330 will. The market is the market crazy as it is.

Shame on you you took a deal away from someone else. The guy wanted you to have it that's why you got the deal, in joy it I would. Take'n advantage of'em is B.S. it was his and sold at his price to you the one he wanted to have it. I lost the same deal for $350 cuzz i never ask truth b known he would have gave it to me if he had known i was interested, lost cuz i did not ask. I knew his dad thought the world of the tractor and never knew he did not like it till he told me he got another and sold the old junker for $350. Some want to keep the memories some want it gone.

some friend you are. Hope you son doesn"t learn to take advantage of his "friends" ignorance like that. If you are sure you did the right thing call the guy and tell him that you knew what it is really worth. See if he is still your "friend".

Money isn't the cure to everything. The owner could have advertised the tractor, got more, and never seen the tractor again. The owner of the tractor knew the buyer, and knew it would stay in the area. Now if the new owner was to sell the 330 next week you could say all the bad things. Just my opinion at this late hour. The test is to put the shoe on the other foot. If this guy tries it on and doesn't mind that he could have had thousands more if his friend had told him, then it is fine. I think few that have thought it was a great deal would like to have this deal done to them. There would not be many friendships intact. But, hey he got a great deal, apparently that's all that matters to most. I doubt this guy calls the "friend" and tells him what happened. It is difficult to put a price on friendship, but I think this guy sold one at $14,250.

I haven't a clue what that tractor is or what it is worth.
You called him a friend. Why would you do that to a friend?
I bought a tractor for $100 and a few years later bought a second one from the man's son. I gave the son $1000 for his because when I bought the first one, I did not know his Dad wasn't well, and that the tractor had been worth more.

Laugh and smile all you want but SHAME on you also.

yeah i know that i got a real bargain but this guys dad is deceased. I think that he let me have it so cheap because he knows that i will restore it and keep it instead of like some people that would have only bought it and turned a fast buck and no i dont have trouble at night sleeping over it. Just feel like that today might have just been my lucky day

yeah, I had a real good idea what they are worth .That is the reason that I asked him 4 times was he really sure that was what he wanted for it .Said that he had rather me to get it than anyone else ,his dad and my dad knew each other real well and farmed some together in past years . I think he knows that it will be restored and kept in the community . He made the comment that he knew it was going to a lot of money to restore and wanted to make sure that I did not get more in it than it was worth [I think it will take less than 3000 dollars to get in top notch shape. I mean the tractor needs very little]I think a certain auctioneer from New Paris would have seen it he sure would have said "what a buy, what a buy"

Good score. It is always good to snatch one from the hands of time and the lethal clutches of the scrap man. Can't imagine why you would have the parts and not want to reassemble it. Great News. Aaron
