I have a local selection between Woods, Bushhog, John Deere, and King Kutter. I am looking for a descent mower but want it to last a couple years. Any ideas?

Got a 5 1/2' Pittsburg that I have had for 15+ yrs. Pull it behind an 8N and it does everything I want it to. Very well made.

I too have an old 6' Sidewinder made by FMC Corp. Not sure if they are still made. I bought it used about 15 years ago for about $400.00. Not sure how old it actually is. It's built heavy and has stood up well for what I use it for. Only mow 8 acres twice a year. There's a few stone dents in the deck side skirting but that's about it. Only had to adjust the slip clutch once so far. Still on the same set of blades but they are about worn out. Will probably have to replace the blades after another season or so.

Guess I have owned about all of them...like Bushhog...but they are like everything else...starting to get cheap in the material and construction...high in price.
Best one I have and really like is an old Sidewinder. Some don't like them and the tire does wear out...but I have sure kept the cedars in the pasture knocked down with it. I have worked the devil out of it...and it just keeps going.
Remember though, ya get what ya pay for....

I had a 12' bushhog bought new worked great until I hit a stump and took out two gear boxes $1200. Usually the blades would fold back and a lot of noise but no damage, not this time. After installing the two new gearboxes I loosened the slip clutch bolts completely loose and mowed two more years and it never did slip even if you killed the tractor. So no matter what brand you get check the slip clutch/shear bolt and make sure it can work. Lee

The Bushogs I've looked at on my dealer's lot all use skip welds and don't appear as heavily built as some of the competitors. I currently use a Landpride RCR 2572. It is OK. I've had it for 10 years and have cut six foot high swamp grass (slowly) and brush up to about 3" and lots of things in between (even a few stones). When I upgrade I'm planning on a John Deere double blade 709. Heavier, more $$$$ but worth it. Look up the specs on each mfg website. Use the "compare" feature if available. I just don't see anything better than Deere BUT I'm talking heavy duty stuff. For example, I wouldn't bother to blow snot at a King Cutter. Some people praise them. Your $$$, your choice.

Well, last year I bought a Bush Hog which I like. So Iwill have to vote for them. Whatever kind you get, get a heavy duty one with a thick deck.

We bought a deere lawnmower again, bottom line is I swear i'll never again buy anything from them again. So I dont know anything about their mowers. But thats just me.

Dad bought me a Woods tiller, it is rock solid. I would go with them if their mowers are anything like their tillers.

Had a 4' King kudder, it held up great and was affordiable, good name in my opinion.

My 2cents worth.

I'm amazed at the stuff my Bushhog has gone through. If you buy one used make sure your shear bolt is the right grade (not too soft or stout). Also, don't let anyone else stand around and watch, lest they have a boulder or other large projectile launched at them. Take a grinder to the blade every season too. Have fun.

We have a JD MX6 and it has worked great for us.
Seems to be built heavy enough. A friend has a king kutter and haven`t heard anything negative about that one either.

We went with the deere cause we have a good dealership close, and they`ve always treated us well.

To each his own,but I'd rather mow with a flail mower. They cut better and not nearly as dangerous from hitting hidden objects. They will handle multi flower rose bushes and real small twig sized trees. You can pick up used ones reasonable. Just check and make sure the rotor is not bent. If you have any small trees in the way just pull them out with a chain then you don't have a sharp stump ready to puncture a tire.
